Herman And The Hermits

A Memory of Morecambe.

The Floral hall along with a cafe, cinema also had a dance hall as a ballroom dancer and local I regularly attended for practice and competition. It was also the dance hall of choice for Saturday night having the better bands the Central Pier was Friday nights. However my enduring memory is of it being Glasgow Fortnight ( the annual holiday period for folks from Glasgow) and Herman and the Hermits were to play the Saturday night . Now as a regular I was known to the guys on the door but everyone girls included had to be searched to make sure no concealed weapons, as the guys from Glasgow had a reputation for fights...
Peter Noone (Herman) came on stage jumped on to the piano and declared " Hello all you people from Edinburgh" well the place erupted fights every where. the bar had a metal roller shutter that I can still hear closing as the fight continued. I stood near a corner with a chair if anyone friend or foe came near I pretend to hit them with it! It's must have taken 30 minutes for the fight to calm down. What a night what a time.

We always used to go to the Floral mostly on Sat night, there was a crowd of us from Carnforth and we used to get the 2am Glasgow bus home from the bus station. We always seemed to end up in a scrap by the end of the night, either that or get a girl that was the aim of the night, they were great times.Saw some top groups then but we didnt realise how big some of them were to finish up in the end
