The Roman Catholics also built an attractive new church at this time. Father Crook died in 1800 and his place was taken by Father Talbot, who remained in Ormskirk until 1845. He had been arrested in France during the Revolution, but escaped and spent three years in Liverpool before coming to Ormskirk. The Church of St Oswald proved too small for the congregation that was expanding rapidly as more Irish migrated to the town, so plans were made for a new church nearby. Fundraising started in earnest, and by 7 August 1850 the Church of St Anne was completed at a cost of £4,000. The vacated church of St Oswald was converted into a school, to which the pupils in the school in the original chapel over the presbytery were moved. Catholic children were educated there until 1872, when a new school was built in Hants Lane, near the homes of most of the Irish families.
