Childhood Memories In The 1970's

A Memory of Palmers Green.

My maternal grandparents lived in Palmers Green - firstly in Elmdale Road close to what is now the North Circular and then moving to Wentworth Gardens off Hedge Lane. I have many childhood memories of visiting my grandparents and looking around the shops on a Saturday afternoon in the 1970's. We used to cut through the small park at the end of Wentworth Gardens along Hazelwood Lane onto Green Lanes. There was the big department store near the Triangle - can't remember the name - which fascinated me and nearby Broomfield Park. I can always remember the glass cases full of stuffed foxes and birds in Broomfield House. Me and my sister used to collect conkers from the big horse chestnut trees close to the main road. I also remember seeing my uncle racing on the atheltic running track that used to be in the park. I lived in nearby Southgate when I was young and was christened at Trinity-at-Bowes Church on Bowes Road. Whenever I come back to North London to see my relatives (I live in Yorkshire now) I like to drive round the area for a bit of nostalgia!
