Green Road.

A Memory of Penistone.

I lived in Thurlstone from 1962 on Manchester Road and then to Penistone in 1963. I lived at 162 Green Road. My father worked at David Browns as was, and everyday I used to meet him at the gates at 4 oclock when he finished work. I remember possibly hundreds of men going out through those gates all dressed in their navy blue overalls. At the back of our house were some large steps leading down to the lane where all us kids played. There was a fish and chip shop owned by a lady called Winnie with whom my mother was always falling out with as she was always barring us kids for playing round the back of her shop. The swing field was also at the back where we used to make dens out of corrigated metal rusty sheets, we spent hours playing in them. Top of Bosville St were four trees where we would throw a rope around a branch and use as a swing. Castle St was where we would bomb down on our old roller skates and sledges in winter. Waddies was where we would buy our penny worth of sweets and where we would wait for the bedtime man around 6oclock. He would appear everynight and throw pennies on the floor for us to gather up. Berrywell was where we spent long hot summer days playing in the river, building dams of water and catching sticklebacks and castle dam over the road was where we used to sit in a rusty old igloo type of shelter when it rained. When older my best freind lived at Cubley Hall which was then a Childrens Home, now an eating place. I spent hours up there as the children in care had every toy and gadget imaginable for that era. My mum worked at the chicken factory on Manchester Rd then later the Vinigar Factory which was nr Hawleys saw mill then later at Whitchams which was on Green Rd. When I was ten we moved to Unwin St which was an old pre fab airey house. Now knocked down.

What lovely interesting memories for my mum.
She will be 90 in a couple of weeks and I'm very keen to track down Penistone memorabilia for her to treasure. She lived in Cubley, & was married at the Penistone Church. . . . Now down in Gloucestershire since marrying Dad.... We have taken her back from time to time, but too old to travel now. She is still so proud of her roots and if anyone can suggest any books / photos / calendars I would be most grateful.
