About this photo

The Esplanade 1906. Once a proud member of the medieval Cinque Ports, various attempts to revive the town as a seaside resort half succeeded. The Esplanade represents one such attempt after the railway arrived in 1864, but sadly only two of these imposing late-Victorian terraces survive.
