Downshall School

A Memory of Seven Kings.

I used to live in Chester Road, and it seemed miles to walk to school. I attended the infants, primary and secondary schools of Downshall, before moving to St. Albans in the 60s. I remember the baker shop in Meads Lane and given the task of buying a loaf, and a loaf of bread arriving home minus all the poppy seeds, no plastic wrappers then, just tissue paper. I too remember Mr Crisp, Miss How and Miss Hilyard, the games mistress, and the wonderful science teacher who gave me the love of all things scientific. I also remember the huge, well they seemed huge, coal fires in the class rooms, wonderful for drying wet coats, hats and gloves.

I'm Martin Gibbons and was at Downshall Secondary at the same time, 58 to 62. who remembers anyone from 4Z?
Martin Gibbons - did you have a sister called Janet??
Loved your comments - the walk to school always seemed miles to me too. Have vivid memories of people like Mr. Crisp who used to talk about scouting through many lessons as it was his favourite subject. Pretty feisty too - occasionally we would get a wayward child from another school. I can't remember the name of this one but he had a very expensive sheepskin coat and tried the passive aggressive route with Mr. Crisp - massive fail when Mr. Crisp grabbed him by the lapels in the front row and dragged him across the desk! Sharp intake of breath by many!
I was at Downshall Secondary from 1955 to 1961 . I was in an A form all the time Iwas there.Mr Crisp took the football team and history
