Rock And Roll Years

A Memory of South Harrow.

I lived in South Harrow from birth in 1945 in 125 Roxeth Green Avenue. I attended Roxeth Hill primary school until failing the eleven plus and then went to Lascelles Secondary Modern. Not the best of pupils although I was in the A stream. Hated school and was caned all the time or was in the corridor for my sins. I just wanted to work and had a few jobs; paper rounds, helping the milkman and working in South Harrow market, firstly in the record stall and then in the lower greengrocers. Can only remember Ron and Albert (2 of the 4 brothers who owned it), worked full time during the summer of 1960. We played in the fields of Grange Farm mostly and in Dudley Rd with the Rulton family. The lido or swimming pool was one of my favourite places. Dancing was above Burtons in Harrow, dances in schools where we saw Johnny Kidd and the Pirates, a first. There are so many memories. I have been trying to trace Arthur Moulton who was one of my friends at the time. I moved to Manchester and began my working life in a factory making diesel engines. I said I was a deadbeat in school, but I am sure Mr Peacock would have been pleased to know, that later in life I managed to get a degree Bsc in Psychology and post grad diploma from Birmingham. I also qualified as a nurse and worked as a behavioural psychotherapist. Recently returned from a visit to South Harrow - the new school looked great. As for the centre, well what a mess, I have not seen that much rubbish anywhere! The town council should be ashamed of themselves for allowing it to get in the state it is in. I live in France now and the contrast is hard to believe, I have seen a thousand people at a concert in the streets and when it cleared there was no rubbish to be seen. I hope my next visit it will have improved ,for now I will keep my memories.

I worked at Grange Farm from Christmas 1958, when I left Lascelles school, I went there because I never sat my 11plus exam. I was in the C stream all except my last year when for some reason I was put in the B stream, never did find out why. Maybe I chased you for scrumming the apples from the orchard, or chased you off the fields.
Mr Peacock was still there when I left in 1965 I was born in Cole's Crescent in 1950 and must have walked past your house every day in Roxeth Green Avenue - a lovely girl called Susan Andrews lived at 163 Ahh! memories - had a great upbringing with 5 brothers and 2 sisters - now retired in Cambridge
Andress not Andrews
My Dad Ken Bray attended Roxeth hill Primary and grew up in South Harrow with his Brother Ron. He then went on to attend Lascelles (Hope I have the spelling correct) Secondary boys school. He turns 70 this year and I've been looking for memories to print out for his surprise party.
I don't know much about his early years but would love to hear stories. I know that he blew out the candles for the Centenary service of 100 years of the school (Held at St Marys) and was in the local paper as I have the articles.
I am looking for photos of the prefabs in Coles Crescent and the surrounding area.
My family home was 90 Coles Crescent , a gorgeous Prefab being over shadows by the Railway Arches. I used to love listening to the nightly stream trains puffing along the railway viaduct. We lived next to the Electricity sub station and amazingly its still there today 23/01/2022. I would love to step inside and whisk myself back in time and saviour those memories for real. I remember the Keep family who lived opposite to my home. I often wondered what happened to Mrs Keep and her large family.. I vaguely remember Brian Keep. Sometimes in the late evening the Ice cream van would appear. The amazing flavour of the ice cream has not been matched to this present day. I also remember collecting coal with my mother from the local gas works with the sacks in my sisters pram! What seems odd to me to me is the lack of photos of the prefabs in Coles Crescent.. I would love to see general street views where I used to live!. digitalsnapper@me.com
