A Sunday Walk And Picnic .

A Memory of Stanwell.

During the summer of 1948 my family moved to a new council house in Station Crescent, Ashford near my mum's parents. We used to go on a walk to dad's parents in Viola Avenue. The route was as follows; along the footpath between the 'pit' and 'pursers' field, across Staines common to the gate opposite the crooked billet, passed the Country bus garage towards the police station, across the road then along the footpath at the side of the 'lino' factory and so on to Stanwell Moor where we would have a picnic. We would then walk through Poyle, Colnbrook and along the Colnbrook by- pass to Longford, then along the Stanwell New Road to Stanwell Palace, past the gates continuing to the Wheatsheath, turning into Town Lane passing the well that gave the village its name - Saint Ann's Well into Viola and grans for tea and a rest! Then home crossing the A30 at Ashford Hospital to the Stag and Hounds, down the London Road to Avondale and home and bed.......
