Stubbington House / Fosters School In Stubbington

A Memory of Stubbington.

I never went to Stubbington House School, however, I have lived in Stubbington for 70 years. I loved the buildings and the daffodils on the front lawn, the walled kitchen garden on the corner of Bells Lane; the school was almost self sufficient with a dairy and kitchen garden surrounded by high walls in Bells Lane.
I remember the buildings by the entrance in Stubbington Lane always had swallows nests under the roof eaves. The main entrance was in Park Lane, the other was in Bells Lane; all still there today but with different uses. Does anyone remember and know the name of the large manor styled house in Bells Lane that some of the teachers lived in (I delivered papers there in the 1950's)? It has now the Catholic Church on the site. Also the firing range that was in buildings the other side of Stubbington lane. I also saw my first game of rugby played here, as I peered through the hedges in Vicarage Lane, after hearing all the shouting on my way to Sandy's Bakery. Any information on this greatly missed building would be appreciated.

I lived in Stubbington in the 1960's. I lived in Stubbington Lane opposite the old boarding school. When the school closed the park became public. I went to Crofton Junior school. In the village I vaguely remember an old bakery and Dr Packman's surgery. The newsagent and the Spar. Walking to Hill Head after school. Up Bells Lane, Mancroft Avenue. Carisbrooke Ave, through the white wooden gate down the steps to the beach. Further down the beach the beach huts and much further on, the swimming pool in the promenade and Lee Tower. From the village I remember Mays Lane and a little shop called Byways where we bought gobstoppers. The brownie hut. The Red Lyon pub Harold Road. So many memories.
