Fond Memories Of Talacre In The 1960s

A Memory of Talacre.

Like Adam in the post before this, Talace holds very dear memories for me. Mum and Dad bought a caravan in 1960, after we had stayed in an assortment of bungalows in Tyn-y-Morfa on the Warren during the 1950s (where the original bakehouse was by the way). Point of Ayr Caravan Park was 'Taylor's field, with 6 caravans, ours was one of the 6 and we knew Talbot and June Taylor very well. We got our caravan in 1960 which was superceded by 3 others, until we eventually had one with running water and electricity! No more gas mantles! Every weekend and summer holidays was spent playing in the sand dunes. We'd go to the Boathouse Cafe for gas mantles (they were forever breaking!). I remember the cottages (including the lighthouse keeper's) on the way to the beach - they are all under the dunes now. I remember the Calor Gas man in his van cruising round the camp shouting through the speaker "Calor gas calling". We'd run up and down the the dunes all day (I can smell the sparta grass now) then run back for tea, weary but happy. We'd get water from the tap at the end of the Warren. We'd walk the full length of the Warren, right up to Gronant, where every little bungalow was a different design and colour. I can smell the shop now! We'd walk down Station Road after tea, up the 'Devil's Elbow' to Gwespyr, or visit Talacre Abbey, where we'd buy the most beautiful apple jelly made by the nuns. Until recently I still had two colourful cloth clowns, also made by the nuns. As good as the modern caravan sites are nowadays, they don't have the same charm as in my childhood - Talace in the 1960s and 1970s - lovely times!
