Tarvie

A Memory of Tarvie.

We lived in Tarvie for 14 years from 1987 while owning Rogie Falls Filling Station and Snack Bar. The forecourt was famous for "Old Angus", a sitting statue of an old man in a white coat, sitting on a block of stone. His photograph must be all over the world! Many a tourist bus slowed as it passed the site to allow occupants to wave to Angus who was deemed to be waiting for his "long lost lover"! (story by bus drivers). Whilst all-year-round customers were "locals", the tourist season brought many nationalities, the record one Saturday in July 1998 was eleven!

We occupied a croft cottage on the hill above the A835 with a wonderful view of Little and Ben Wyvis and the huge pine forest to the North. At times, the roar of the rutting stags sometimes shook the air, often too close for comfort! We had an acre of "garden" when we moved in, wild and boggy and often the domain of roe and red deer. After some years of hard graft, we had a lochan large enough to curl on (game sliding heavy stones to a target), enough grassed areas to justify a sit-on mower and a highly productive hen run and veg. patch.

The railway going from Dingwall to Kyle of Lochalsh passed on the other side of the valley and, while you could hear it, it was hidden by the pine trees. Occasionally, a steam engined excursion would pass and the steam trail would give away it's progress. Another frequent happening was when the passage of fighter jets and Hercules transport planes flying below our cottage, heading West, the jets making big noise and the Hercules merely "whispering" bye.
