Seven Sisters Road, 1950's & 1960's

A Memory of Tottenham.

I was born in 1952, and lived at 621 Seven Sisters Road, N15 with my dear old mum and dad. I had friends John and David Warren, Micky Walsh, and Ken Heath. Ken lived in Victoria Crescent and I am still in touch with Ken as we both now live in Northamptonshire. I also remember a girl who lived in Kent Road. We were always having parties at my house in the 1960's. I remember Mrs Spencer's shop on Seven Sisters Road she used to come round with a milk cart. I used to help Bob and his wife (surname of Cooper) in the fish and chip shop on Seven Sisters Road, our cat called Billy used to nick his fish over the fence. I remember the sweet shop on the corner and café on the corner of Elizabeth Road and old Mr Snowman's sweet shop next door. Pearce's wallpaper shop and the greengrocer next to them and a family named Harris. I went to West Green School, St Ann's and Seven Sisters, then Markfield. I put together a pop group called The Age - later changed their name to Hello, they played at my 18th birthday party. When I was young I used to go shopping with my mum in West Green Road. I bought my first drum kit from the swap shop in West Green Road. I saw The Who at the club Norick on the corner of Seven Sisters Road, Keith Moon drummer with The Who gave me a drum stick. Marston's garage was on the other side of the road by the bus stop, but my mum who had lived in Stonebridge Road said a fair ground used to come there before the war. I did a paper round for the paper shop by the railway bridgeon the corner of St Ann's, and Watson's and worked for Mr Southby in Stonebridge Road and on his paper stall in West Green Road. My dad got our first TV from Everyman's shop on Seven Sisters Road near the home-made sweet shop and the bike shop.
I remember getting flooded. I remember Wards stores on the corner of Seven Sisters and High Road and the windows-like island you could walk in the arcade. Remember Rudd's on the corner West Green Road, buying my dinky toy cars there and a shop called Marshalls in West Green Road that sold net curtains and things like that but also sold lovely tin toys and ex juke box singles 45's. I remember the last steam train on the West Green Road line and going to the fair at Lordship Lane park as a teenager. I loved rides like the 'tunnel of love' and making some money on a Sunday helping them pack up. I saw Dave, Dee, Dozy, Becky, Mick and Titch at the Tottenham Royal... amazing live band. At Christmas we would go shopping at Bruce Grove or Wood Green. Happy days.

Hi Michael, enjoyed reading your post and I can vaguely remember you from those early Tottenham days. I lived almost opposite Kenny Heath in Victoria Crescent we were good friends until he moved away and being so young I didn't have a clue about these things.I have not seen him since so it is good to know that you are still in touch with him and he is living in Northampton.
All the names of the shops you mention have brought the memories flooding back. Good days they were I don't think any of us had much but we knew how to enjoy ourselves.
All the best to you and thanks again for the post.
Billy Clark

Hi Michael, All pretty good many, many twists and turns in my life since those early days. I am living in Harlow at the moment but moving away in May. I don't really have any photos from those days as I don't think my parents could afford a camera.
I will email you soon. Say hi to Ken.
All the best,
Billy
Michael Rafferty,I hope you are still able to see posts on this site,I was born in 1950 in Hackney hospital, and lived in Tottenham for 26 years before getting married and moving to Waltham cross,I remember some of the things you mentioned,Seven sisters road was quite a hot-spot for me in my youth, when I wasn't in the Tottenham Royal,I was enjoying the music at the blues room, the Astoria Finsbury park,or the flower pot pub in St.Annes road N.16. Lots of top names including the Spencer Davis group,Jimi Hendrix, the Dave Clark five, the Who,and the small faces,I knew Steve Marriot quite well and had more than a few pints with him at the Royal standard in Walthamstow and the Horn of plenty pub in Hatfield. So before this turns into my life story,I will tell you why I was prompted to comment on your post,I now live in Spain and will become an old age pensioner in a few weeks,it's 41 degrees in the shade today,so I was sitting in the living room with the air-con going full blast"silver surfing" looking through the web about the old days, and stumbled across your comments, specifically the group Hello,I thought you may be interested to know that I lived next door to Vic Faulkner (Base player in the group) in Hitchin Hertfordshire for quite a few years and became good friends, and he gave me all of his vinyl records which I kept until I came to Spain in 2007,I know he was still very involved in the music scene until 1986.I don't know if you think the same way I do,but I think they were great days, and sometimes I like to re-live those days. The world was a lot smaller then, and we were a few miles apart,I was near Tottenham Hale, and before we all had a Lambretta,Vespa,or Ford Anglia 100e,we had to walk a long way for a night out.So although you don't know me,I hope I have brought back some memories for you.
Hi David thanks for getting in touch, I am still in touch with Vic ver Facebook and he is still very much involved in music and has turned Germany, but the funny thing is Vic now loves is in Spain small world. He has also written a book on is life in music and the early years.

I am building an O gauge model railway of West Green station and if you go to you to youtube and type in West Green railway you will all my videos.

However here is some thing you will really find amazing, it is a video of a train trip from North Woolwhich to Palace Gates and it shows Sevensisters Road and probably your house, certain Doctor Maslin who was our doctor. A trolleybus heads north towards Manor House

If you have any stories from those days it would be nice to hear them. All the very best, Billy Clark
