I was thrilled to read your blog, and relate to your experience. Now that I am 72-years-old and have lived in the US for over 45 years I figured there weren't too many people left who remembered HS as I did. And you were there about 10 years after me!
I was fascinated and interested in your account of the NHS with its challenges and problems. My California RN license permitted me to obtain a teaching credential and instruct Nurse Assistants/Home Health Aides for State Certification. You may be sure that the practicality of my training at HS and St. Mary's was passed on to my students in the manner of what I called, "quality care." From putting a, "donkey," in the bed, to two people forming a, "chair," to transfer a patient from a bed to a chair.
