Holy Cross
A Memory of Wallsend.
I was the born at the Green in Wallsend. I used to live in Holy Cross and I remember the burn, the old cemetery at the top of our road and shopping on Wallsend High Street. My dad was a supervisor at the Rising Sun Pit. We also lived in Longbenton on Chesters Ave, no 23 to be exact, I started school at Balliol. I remember taking the bus up to Four Lane Ends to do a bit of shopping with me mam. My grandparents, Leslie and Jane Handyside were from Byker and I used to take the bus to Fairless Street by myself, unheard of these days, and spend Sundays with them, usually going to the Quayside to shop for gran's "bargains'. I now live in lovely Canada but, "you can take the Geordie out of England, but you will never take England out of the Geordie", especially the North East.
