Walton On The Hill In 40s

A Memory of Walton on the Hill.

I was born and lived in Chequers Lane Walton in 40s. Our house which was No 74 was the Police House and I used to cycle to St Hildas School at Tadworth, run by Miss Adams who lived in house opposite Chappell's newsagent in Tadworth. I went to school with young Chappell. but sadly cannot remember his name. Used to be great as a kid riding across the wonderful expanse of Walton Heath and the Golf Club where Miss Paul was secretary.

My father as the local Police Officer given freedom of the course by Miss Paul for services to the club during the war and used to play there and did so quite often with Mr Miles who was a local probation officer. I remember the 80A buses that used to turn around and park at The Chequers, before later on doing so in Howard's Close.

I also vividly remember getting the 406 from Hedge Corner to Reigate when I moved to St Mary's that was the junior part of Reigate Grammar School.

Great memories also of the Boys Brigade band marching through Walton on a Sunday and along Chequers Lane, playing their stirring music and disbanding at Howard's Close.

Could go on but am sure that is enough for now. December 2013 - Guildford

Did you ever know the Hibberd girls ? Alan Cooper who stayed with thier granny Kemp
Hi Lesley, sorry cannot remember them, where a outs did they live? I don't remember staying with anyone then, as my Mother was. At home and I had younger sister, Beryl. Regards Alan
Many thanks for your reply Alan It is good to know this site it is a really nice site too
Would like to know from Frith the number and destination of that old bus outside the Chequers in 1932 I was at Chequers last week on 3rd November 2016. Wouldn't have thought that all those years ago when I lived at 74
Alan - the double decker is a London General Omnibus on route 181 destined for Morden station. This eventually became the 80A which as you probably know, which then switched its terminus to Tooting Broadway and then back to Morden again, before its demise. An earlier version of the route went all the way to *Charing Cross in the very early days. I believe the single decker is an East Surrey Traction Company bus going to Leatherhead. This subsequently became route 435 under London Transport, then route 416 to Esher, before it was axed in the early 70s.

*Here's a short silent film (London Transport Museum) which includes an open topped LGOC bus in the 1920s, starting out from the Chequers and bound for Charing Cross. Lots of other local scenes too - Tadworth, Sutton and Reigate, etc.. Click here http://tinyurl.com/gvujqa3
Hi Steve Thanks for that memory, I sadly am old enough to remember the D buses that operated from The Chequers to Tooting Broadway. Cannot get the link you kindly gave me as not recognised. Regards Alan Ps I think that then the 436 came along Chequers Lane on route to Leatherhead.
Alan - They seem to block live links on here, so you will need to copy and paste it into your browser, I'm afraid - http://tinyurl.com/gvujqa3
Interesting that we lived in the same house number 74, I moved there from Streatham my father was a policeman and I must have been about 6 at the time. By that time there was an infant school and a junior school in Beech Lane, for school dinners we had to walk through the village from the junior school to the infants where the dinners were made.
Next door to us was Mr Tame who worked/perhaps owned the butchers in the village. Last time I drove through the village the shops opposite The Chequers were still there, the farm there has gone, it had a period as a foreign bird farm and then an aquarium/pond fish sales - now it is houses.
Hi Annette, when we moved it was due to Met taking over the area and then in late 60s/70s I was at Surbiton Traffic Unit and often stopped at cafe opposite Chequers for a cup of tea. And of course covered the Europeans Golf at Walton Heath. Reg Tame and his wife attended my wedding. When did you move to 74? I still visit the Chequers for lunch 3 or 4 times a year. Regards Alan
Steve thanks for that link, what a brilliant piece of film. Having joined Museum, I might be able to get a copy of this. The bus I referred to was an STL with a lid. Regards Alan
Hi Alan, we lived at 74 from approx 1957ish till 1967, dad was PC Z573, he was based at Epsom. It did have difficult moments being a child of the only two policemen in the village at the time. Were the Ralph's in the other part of the semi? Annette
Hi Annette. I started at Surbiton Unit in late 1967 so am not sure would have known your Dad. The chap I did met there had a strong accent that I cannot really identify. Maybe that was the one the followed your Dad. Didn't know next door. Alan
