Wellington Pub

A Memory of Waterlooville.

My grandmother Ethel West ran the Wellington pub in Waterlooville during the 1940s, my grandad Ernest was a manager at the Brunswick Lanudry, while Nan ran the pub, they were quite a busy couple. My mother Doris who was a war widow went to work at the Wellington as a barmaid, and while working there met my father who was Ethel's eldest son, Dad served in the Navy, and so was away at war.
My parents had some memories of those times, I think they mentioned that they served up ham from the bar on certain days. I have a recollection as a young child in the 1950s being taken in the "snug" or family room they had. I have been trying to find some photos of the pub at that time, as I am doing the family tree, does anybody have any recollections or photos of that time? Does anyone remember the West family?

I stumbled across your entry this evening about the Wellington Pub in Waterloovile. I lived in Denmead 1963-71.When I was a student I had a job at Christmas doing a postal round delivering the mail for the Post Office (Now Royal Mail). They sent us out in pairs on Post Office issued bicycles. The postal round me and my mate had was in Purbrook. They paid us hourly. I remember The Wellington well. After having "slow bicycle rides" me and my mate would slip into The Wellington for a "quickie" in the Public Bar on our way back to the sorting office situated in Waterlooville just inside the road that led down to Denmead and Hambleton. Ahh .Happy days.

My granddad always drunk in the welly. I remember he use to take me in there sometimes. It had a parrot in there once remember. His name was Dave Moore and was a builder in the waterloovile area.Angie
