Growing Up In Welling By Dennis Cooke

A Memory of Welling.

What fantastic memories I have of growing up in Welling. I was brought up in Clifton Road which was opposite the Guy Earl of Warwick pub. I went to Primary School at Fosters which was in Northdown Road then (it has since moved to Westbrook Road). I then went to Elsa Road Boys School and I was there from 1955 to 1959. Saturdays was always the highlight of the week when we went to Ferrari's coffee shop then onto the afternoon session at the Embassy Court which was for juniors. Home for tea and watch Six Five Special and Happy Days on the television before going back to the Embassy and dance the night away to the Ted Heath band. During the school holidays it was over to Danson Park where we were either on the rowing boats or in the outdoor swimming pool. Welling corner played a big part in my life then with all the different shops and stores we used to regularly go in. The Orange library, Maynes, Woolworths of course and up the road a bit was the only Mens outfitters we used to go which was Harry Fentons for the Italian suits.
I could go on...Great days which we will never experience again.

Hi Dennis. Loved reading your memories of welling. Although I never lived in welling, I did work there. I was transfered from the menswear dept of the RACS Lower Belvedere to the welling men’s wear dept in 1958. I was 15 years of age. Have great memories of the town , and the people working at the store, lunchtime going up to the coffee bar beyond the Granada cinema. Used to meet my girlfriend off the bus on the corner to go to the pictures on Saturday night. Sadly the store has now gone, and so many of the places and people we knew. But thankfully the memories remain. Wish you all th best. Peter Harris. ( my own memories are on this site)
Hello Dennis lovely to read about your memories living in welling. I was born in 1954 in john Newton court opp Clifton road and I also went to Elsa rd school. I remember Ferrari’s, Irange Libarary and the other places you mentioned. I had wonderful parents and although quite poor I had a fantastic childhood living in Welling. Take care
