About this photo

The Hope was one of the many inns and pubs that lined the course of the canal, at one time or another. Before the days of refrigerators, patrons often suspended bottles of beer in the canal to keep it cool - one can only hope that the seals were sound!

These two pictures are an echo of the commercial waterways of the past. The whole area shown in these two photographs vanished when the new bridge over the river and the new Churchill Road were built to ease congestion in the town centre in 1971. The new Somerfield supermarket now stands on the site of the old Hope Inn.
