A Foggy Trip to Glasgow

From Balloch 1901

While studying and working in dreary damp Manchester in November 1967 I persuaded three friends in my Hall of Residence at the university to go away for the weekend to Glasgow. The attraction was a football match so we made the ambitious decision to attempt a day trip after breakfast on Saturday morning.

Big mistake - it was foggy and we only just made it to Glasgow in time for the 3 o'clock kick-off at Parkhead to watch Celtic notch up a comfortable home win. After the game it was not only dark but also very foggy and there was no chance we could make the journey back to Manchester. Instead we booked in for a night at the Glasgow YMCA and were rewarded on Sunday morning with a bright sunny but cold day. We were unable to resist the temptation for some sightseeing and drove our old Morris Minor out to Balloch. We walked on the pier, took photos of Loch Lomond had a picnic lunch and... Read more

Living in Luss Village

The Village c1931
Enlarge photo |  More about this photo

We just moved to a place outside village called Yewtree Lodge. About 1yr later we moved into village to a house called Rhu House. My brother, sister & I went to Luss Primary School where our Head Teacher was called Mrs Gamble. The other teacher was Mrs Taylor, her dad owned The Highland Arts Shop in village which is now owned by her brother Duncan Taylor. My dinner lady was called Mrs Macdonald. Mrs Taylor left and along came a teacher called Mrs Nonabell. We lived in the village until 1983 when my dad lost his job on Luss Estates through ill health. This village is where I was most happy in life. I went up to visit 2004 and things for me look the same except the house I lived in has gone, it's now a hotel called The Lodge. if there is anyone out there who remembers me or my family please don't hesitate and write to me. It would be good to remember my past with some... Read more

NORTHFIELD ROAD

Too many childhood memories to list. Too many childhood friends to list. I moved away with my family in 1960. And "WWW" has reunited so many of us in the last few years. We are all over the world now but can take a walk down "CYBER MEMORY LANE".

On The Seafront

i went to school at the hermitage acadamy for about a year because my dad was in the navy at the time stationed at rosneath. my parents and i used to walk along the seafront and have tea and ice cream in tony,s ice cream parlour. there are wonderful views over the gareloch here ,you can see rosneath point from the front.

Great Childhood

I was born in Alexandria but lived my whole life in Renton, the last place I lived was 3 McKim Walk. I also lived at 313 Main Street. I went to Renton public school and attended first year at Vale of Leven Academy. I loved growing up in Renton and all the adventures I had with my friends Lynn Smith and Elaine McFarlane. We would go up the "Hill" and feel like we were in the wilderness away from everyone, I remember going up the Ben and running as fast as I could down the hill because out of nowhere a bunch of cows appeared. I loved the freedom we had as kids, going wherever we wanted, maybe places we shouldn't have, but we had the freedom to be "Free" which unfortunately today we can't give our own kids. I miss my old school friends but we have all grown up with the spirit of the Renton in our souls. My dad was Billy Gray and was a great football... Read more

Old Friends

Hello, I have written some memories about my childhood in Renton. It's amazing how many people you meet in the world.. I loved the Renton and Bonhill, places that I remember well, and some of the people that shaped my life.. My Mom's name is Helen Gray, her name was Helen Thomson she has three brothers, Robin, Jim, Alex and a sister Marion. She might know some of the names that I've seen, I had a note from Senga McKenna, maybe you might remember my family. Anyway.. Hello to all of you in Scotland... Marion (Gray) Court

Bluebells

I lived in Carman Road, Renton until the age of 4 but I have many memories of Renton as my gran and papa lived in the Back Street. I remember walking up the dam and picking the bluebells. To this day I love bluebells. I also remember the swans in the dam and I seem to remember a spring well where you could stop and have a drink. My dad was Tom Murphy and his parents were Ellen (nee Bell) and John Murphy. Gran worked in Jamiesons dairy and as a kid my brother, cousin and I used to sometimes sit on the milk float while Gran did her deliveries. I am 53 now and Dad and my grandparents are no longer here but oh, how they helped me become the person I am today.
