Caption for London, Diamond Jubilee 1897

After 60 years on the throne, Queen Victoria did not have the strength to climb the steps of St Paul's Cathedral for her Jubilee thanksgiving service, so it was held outside. The Archbishop of Canterbury Frederick Temple is third from the right. The ground beneath the carriage now has a carved inscription recording the occasion.

In the 1901 census my great-grandfather, Matthew Wise, was a night watchman close to the Bank of England at 6 Lothbury. I had found my grandmother as a child of 4 living with her mother Matilda and family in Hackney, but as initially I didn't know his first name I needed to carry out some detective work to find him!
