Historical Information

Hi I am from New Zealand and from information I have my ancestors came from Semer the male name is johnson and the Female maiden name was Cuthbert, the only info I have indicates that they lived there in the mid 1700's i would be plesed to know any information about the town etc or if any Johnsons or Cuthberts still live there thank you Don Johnson

Josphen Culling

Joseph Culling was my Great Great Grandfather, he was born in Offton in 1819. He married an Eliza who was born in 1802 in Semer, they had 4 children, Charles, Emma, Patience and Dinah (my great grandmother). Does anyone know of this family, they are very elusive and I cannot find many references to them.

I would like to add a memory of Boxford, no, wonderful memories that I have of Boxford 65 years ago.
As a child of four, I was evacuated with my grandmother Mary Jane Farthing, nee Carpenter, to Boxford to stay with her parents, my great Grandmother Mary and Grandfather Charles Carpenter at Tinywent Corner - a little cottage with a well and a toilet way up the end of the garden.
The start of this adventure suddenly went haywire when the train stopped at Marks Tey, and we had to walk the rest of the way to Boxford.
Looking up Swan Street, the school I attended would have been behind me, and also the village hall. This was our meeting place on a Saturday morning to see the silent black and white pictures with somebody playing the piano.
Moving up Swan Street, the first house on the right was rented out to my great uncle Eddy and great aunt Flo. (Her Yorkshire pudding and gravy, cooked on paraffin stove was... Read more

Stone Street, Boxford

William Balaam born in Stone Street, Boxford in 1870 or thereabouts. He was my Grandfather's stepfather. Grandad often talked of Boxford. It is believed that later in William Balaam's life he became a Mayor or Lord Mayor - however, we are not certain which town in the UK he became Mayor of - because he moved to London at some stage and married in West Ham, Essex. His father's name was Walter Balaam. Hope someone living in Boxford, Suffolk remembers the Balaam Family.

Can You Help??

We have just discover some of our relatives may have come from the Boxford area. Does anyone remember or recall anyone of the name of Churchyard or maybe Greenwood living in Boxford or nearby, maybe even Ipswich. Our father maybe went to a boys home in the area in the 20's and 30's

Can anyone help with our search for anyone with these names or anyone who may have been at a boys home. We would be very grateful for any help or information.

My Youger Days

Hello, I lived on Hadleigh Road & I went to Boxford school from age 7 until 11 plus, Mr Sore was Headmaster who lived in the village in Riverside house. The village hall opposite the school was where I would go to have my lunch during school. I recall the General Stores, Riddlestones paper shop & Grimwoods, a lovely little shop with a really nice lady serving. I believe she was Malcolms relation? I joined a tap dancing class held upstairs in The Fleece.
When I left school I used to park my cycle in Rules`s bus shed! I have vague memories of the flooding of the river too.
Had an Aunt Kate who lived opposite to Police station an imposing building which I could see everytime I travelled into the village down Bank Hill, I think that was the name. My Father worked as a builder for Mr. Self who retired & Mr. Kingsbury took over.
Also recall the dairy Mr. Peeks, often went there to... Read more

The Lost Cat

Some years ago (lots of ago) we obtained a cat from the R.S.P.CA. My sons were delighted for a while but just after lunch a son, with tears running down his face, blurted out that the cat had disappeared. We all started hunting starting with our house. The search widened and widened but still no sign of the cat.

We all went home feeling sad as it seemed the cat disappeared totally. We had a quiet tea and told the boys we would get them another cat. A bit later there was vast "whoop" of happiness from upstairs.

Our eldest son had decided to change clothes and had pulled out a drawer in his chest of drawers further than normal. There, right at the back, sound asleep in his clothes was the cat!

Everything was happy again and the cat was warned not to be so silly in future but she took no notice of us, doing what she wanted, whenever... Read more
