Madeley - as it was

I was born in 1949 in Victoria Road, Madeley and have many memories of life as it was in the 1950's onwards. I remember Jones' buses, Pooles the cobblers, Carters, Stodd's the Drapers, Shums the chemist, and most memorable of all, Nellie Oakes' shop in Park Avenue. It was always a delight to visit there to purchase four chews... [more]

does anyone remember Alice Amy Robinson

Does anyone remember Alice Amy Robinson or any of the Robinsons, who lived at 33 Broadway Shifnal during the war? I would love any memories of them. Thankyou, Barbara Madeline de Havilland (formerly known as Margaret Robinson)

Another memory . . .

This is a follow on from my earlier memory - Christmas in Shifnal. What a wonderful time. I can remember it snowing at Christmas time as a child, and sitting in the bay window of our flat above the cakeshop and toyshop at 4 Bradford Street watching the carol singers sitting on the back of a truck travelling along Bradford Street... I miss Shifnal and have very happy fond memories.

I have just gone onto this site. I remember the Goliahs. It was when I was a little girl, Mr Goliah used to regularly visit my dad and I think at one stage he dropped off a load of cattle manure with a horse and cart for our garden.   I can also remember the milkman in the early 1950s delivering milk... E M Goliah

My Grandmother Mrs E M Goliah had a general stores on Broadway I believe it was sold circa 1956 due to ill health, I believe it was an Elizabethan style property, and was next door to Cheadles, the 'clock' shop. The property no longer exists due to 'redevelopment'

Apprenticeship

C&W Walkers Ltd Gas & Constuctional Engineers - I worked here from 1964- 1976 when I did my apprenticeship as a welder/fabricator. Unfortunatly it was demolished in 1993 and turned into a housing estate.

Shropshire Photographic Memories

The Court House gets its name because it was once, in the 16th century, the home of a leading lawyer and speaker in the House of Commons. The most famous resident, however, was Abraham Darby, who lived here for a time after he arrived in the area. The building has recently been restored and is now a hotel.

Down the Severn Photographic Memories

Madeley Court dates from the Tudor period, and was the oldest building in the old village of Madeley (now a part of Telford). It looks as though some work is being done on the roof, and the buildings appear to be intact and free of ivy. In later years part of Madeley Court would become a ruin.

Shropshire Living Memories

Now a hotel, the Old Court House was built by Sir Robert Brooke - he had bought the estate for £946 (an enormous sum of money for the times) following the dissolution of the monasteries by Henry VIII. The name of the house comes about because he was a lawyer and also speaker of the House of Commons.
