Mid Glamorgan memories
Treorchy
I was born on High Street in Treorchy in 1959 in the house that belonged to my grandparents and that my mother still lives in today! We moved to Stafford in 1962 for work for my Dad but came to visit Treorchy a few times a year. I remember going to the park with the swings and the witches hat and the "boat" which was somewhere in the vicinity of the picture here. I recall a little shop on the corner which sold penny ice lollies which my brother and I would always buy. And I recall in the field outside of the playground, there was a hut, and some bands used to practice in there. We could always here the music and I think one of the bands was The Strawbs. Not certain, cant find any record of it but I am pretty sure they used to practice there. I remember going to get ice cream at the bracchis in Treorchy, and... Read more
Blaen Mission.
My earliest memories of Blaenllechau are of teens dances in the Mission. A guy called Twm Twice organised them. A school friend from North Road School who lived in Blaen used to be there, Alun John or John Alun. I also had great friends at St Thomas's Church - especailly Graham Hatton. My grandmother hailed from 27 Mountain Road. Gwenllian Harries.
From Malcolm Harries - more to follow hopefully
BLAENLLECHAU
My grandparents Jim and May Condon lived at 1 Glynn View, Blaenllechau. My father was in the Air Force so I didn't spend that much time in Blaen, but when I did I loved the place. Thirty eight years ago I moved to Australia to live, and 3 years ago I went back for the first time. Things had not changed that much, only now there are a lot of trees, because then the mountains were black with coal soot. But I still had that great feeling I always got when I visited my nan and bam many years ago, in fact I loved it that much, I visited again last year, 2009. And I'm sure in the next few years I will be back for another visit.
Blaenllechau - My Childhood Home.
Brought up in Blaenllechau, immediately after the WWII, life was not as complicated as it is today. Our playground included all the mountain behind us, Llanwonno, the woods and even the park. I delivered papers around the village, and the majority of houses did not have locks on, it was open the door, drop the paper in and close it. My paternal grandfather was "Evan John Evans", fireman underground and some say, very proactive in the opening of the Radical Club, but there is no proof of that. I attended St Thomas's Church, and recall the name Graham Hatton also Tony Wills. The families in Commercial Street I recall are:- Hughes; Mason; Williams; Thomas (Chapel); Matthews; Owens; Allen; Phillips; Harris; Reynolds; White and of course we had a Councillor who became Mayor of the Rhondda. I'm very proud to have been a Blaen Boy.
Blaenllechau
My great uncle was Mayor of the Rhondda, he lived in Commercial Street, his name was Evan Edwards, he was married to my grandfather's sister, they have a son who now lives in Ferndale.
Blaenllechau
Hi
I just came upon this website completely by accident.
My Mum was Judith Hatton, sister of Graham, and Tont Wills was their adoptive brother although he was a cousin. I used to stay in Blaenllechau with my gran when I was a child, my brother and myself loved it there.
Now I'm almost 50 I am doing a history degree and we are studying the Rhondda valleys and the coal industry. It's brought it all back to me, the community up there was second to none. I think I'll pop back up there for a drive again after xmas.
New Year's Eve And Blaen Infants School
Born and bred in Princess Street, Blaen, stayed until the family moved to Maerdy and from there I went to East Glamorgan Hospital to train as a nurse. Now in Bangkok working as a consultant to a large general hospital, haven’t been back to Blaen for about 20 years or more but must get there next time I am in area. One of my earliest memories is of New Year’s Eve in the mid-1950s, I was five or six, my mother and father got me up from bed to hear the whistles of the trains in the siding blow at midnight. We stood on the door hand in hand, the night was cold and the sky clear. The stars twinkled and shone like mercury on velvet. When the whistles fell silent we went inside and my father had a beer, my mother probably a sherry and I had a glass of home-made ginger beer. Who do I remember? Neil Jones, Dai Mason, Robert Harris, Byron Lidbury, Alex Petrovich, oh so... Read more
