The Cannon, High Street, Maidstone
During the late 1940s and early 1950s my brothers and I were Scouts and each summer we went to Scout Camp at Westgate on Sea. There was no M20 in those days so our journey by lorry took us through Maidstone High Street and we were all excited to be the first to spot the cannon which I believe was captured at Sebastopol during the Crimean War. In high summer it could take half an hour to pass through the town! Great days. Ken Cook

RE: RE: The Cannon, High Street, Maidstone
Nothing much has changed with regard to passing through Maidstone, it still takes for ever, you can join the queue at Ringlestone and eventually leave it at the top of Linton Hill or Parkwood depending on your final destination. The scenery has changed a lot, no more woodyard or Morello brandy sign, Tillings is of course still about but in place of the gas storage tanks we now have a brand new ugly rusting Travel Lodge adorning the bridge and riverside. Stone Street is still not pretty after all these years and in my lifetime probably never will be. Wrens Cross has a large listed building currently rotting to bits, if it's so important to save it why does no one do so and put it to use again?
