Sydney Wood
My father, Sydney Wood was born in Malborough in 1914. He moved away to get married in 1940 but always considered Malborough as home right up until his death in 1992. He always maintained that he was the young water carrier in this picture and had a copy of the original postcard. It is believed that the gentleman with the beard was "Datcher" Shepherd (This being Devon dialect for "Thatcher"). Some of my relatives still live in Malborough and I have traced our ancestry in Malborough back to 1712.

RE: RE: Sydney Wood
I have recently discovered that I have a connection with Malborough. My Great great grandmother Grace Wood b.1813 daughter of James and Hannah ( nee Lapthorn)Wood married George Sadler in Malborough in 1831. Despite not being aware of the connection my husband and I spent a weekend in Salcombe a couple of years ago and loved the area. We will definitely return to visit Malborough. We must be connected via Wood family surely?!

RE: RE: Sydney Wood
Yes Alison, we do have a connection way back. Grace Wood was the first cousin of my 2x great-grandfather, John Wood (1816). Their respective fathers were brothers James b. 1785 and John b.1782.
That will make us very distant cousins!
