FAMILY HOME IN THE CHURCHYARD
My grandmother was born in the churchyard - as was my mother and her siblings- well actually in a cottage which abutted the church wall - the family lived in the cottage for almost 100 years until it was condemned and pulled down in the 1920's - they built an air-raid shelter on the site during WWII and now they have built St Johns Communtiy Centre there. The place was Vine Cottage -Wheatleys Place, there were connecions wth the cottage and the Theatre Royal going back to the late 1700 early 1800's.

RE: RE: FAMILY HOME IN THE CHURCHYARD
Hello Sally, thank you so much for telling us about Vine Cottage.
When I babysat for my eldest grandaughter from 2000 until she was five I walked through St jOHNS so many times to get to the town centre and back.
And now I find that the community centre was once your familys home for many years, which is such a lovely thought. However, I wonder did the cottage come to be there in the grounds of the Church. To have been born in a churchyard. Wow thats going some you know.
When I go again this year for my grandaughters Christmas service at St Johns, I shall take a special look at your little corner.
Regards Liz Griffin

RE: RE: FAMILY HOME IN THE CHURCHYARD
My grandmother's family, Bowley, also lived in a cottage on the Margate Road, I think. My grandmother told me that during the WWI they would take shelter in the caves, which I've never seen, perhaps you know them? My great grandfather was a gardener at that time for a very big house and the cottage was on the property. Kindest regards, Jan Groom
