Dalelands
The car in this picture is parked outside my old home. I wonder, was it my Dad's car? Not many of us had cars then. I spent many hours under the lamp-post as it got dark, before I got called in. We were pretty safe to play out in those days. There was a hill to the right of that car, and we sped down it on our bikes. Once I lost my brakes and shot into the fence at the bottom on the other side of the road! I skinned quite a few bits of me that day! Dianne Howells

Hi Dianne, the car was a Ford or an Austin, I had an Austin 7, speedy car 40 miles per hour, ha ha. John

Weren't they little smashers, those cars, John. When we moved further up the road, Dad changed his car to a Hillman Hunter. What fun I had in the garage with him, grinding in valves. I was quite a little grease monkey, for a girl! Dianne

John, that SHOULD have read 'Smashers'.
On reflection even that sound like some sort of impact... LOL!

When I see this photograph it reminds me of just how steep that bank is that leads from lower (not social) Dalelands to upper - going up or down it is pretty foreboding! I think it was a `planning office blunder` - both estates were built, then someone realised just how much difference there was in the land level - a quick and relatively cheap solution - make a bank - doesn`t matter if it's a bit steep - the locals will never question it (we never did!!). I once came down this bank on my pushbike and the brakes failed - I ended up in someone's front garden and the rather irate resident came out and 'shooed' me off (he was more concerned about his flora then whether I was OK or not!!).
