Tyne and Wear memories

Summer Days

Church Lane c1955

This lane has mixed memories for me, I've enjoyed some of my happiest moments running down the lane to the park at the bottom and some of the worst walking out of the church after funerals of the people I loved most but one things for sure this is one of the many pretty places in a very pretty village that always makes me smile and proud of the fact that I was born and bred here.

My Grandmother's House

I have very early memories of visiting my grandmother (my dad's mother) in Whitburn. It's taken me a while to find the address, but I think it was 14 Cleveland View. My memories are a bit vague, I was very young, but I remember being fascinated by the shutters on the windows. Does anyone know the house?

John Street Whitburn

I used to live at 8 John Street. It was an unmade road with an assortment of housing. I would have been about 5 so my memories are fuzzy and vague. Would anyone have a copy of an old street street map of Whitburn for round about this time showing this street? The street has long gone and been replaced with better housing. I remember the outside loo across the yard at the back.

Happy Days!

The Village c1955

In about 1960 this spot was a hang out for the local teenagers - myself being one!

Out of the pic and to the left was a youth centre run by the church (the local vicar lived next door to that) and after doing whatever we did there (chatting up girls mostly!) we would congregate at the village pond, the railings of which are seen at left of the pic.

I remember the local Mr. Plod on his bike would often come and chase us away - but as soon as he scarpered we would be straight back there!

The large building at top right of the pic became the Britannia Pub - think it still is?

Whitburn Road

I am seeking information on a house named "Howdenside" or something similar in Whitburn Road during the period 1899-1926. My great uncle Robert Charles Atkinson gave it has his address when he went to Cleadon in Nov 1899 just prior to marrying a Mary Ellen (Mollie) BROWN. Mollie gave it as her address when she visited in 1926. However the 1911 census has the occupier as a Mr Robson. I would love to know the connection

Going to Open Air School The Lonnon

I am searching for photos or maps as it was such a happy and carefree time. I have three photos.

My dad's mum lived in Fowler Street in 1901 aged 5 years old, her name was Frances Ann Coulson. She was married to a David Taylor in June 1914. Their son was my father, called Charles Henry Taylor. I am Joyce Collins, nee Taylor. I am doing the family tree, can anyone out there help me to trace family members living today, who may have old photos with names to put with my family tree, please? My dad had sisters called Elixabeth (known as Betty), Doreen, and also brothers? He lived at Monkton Avenue, South Sheilds with his family. Many thanks, Joyce Collins (nee Taylor)
