Remembering Marske By The Sea
We came to Marske in August 1948 having just demobbed from the Army 9 weeks earlier, we purchased a shop at 221 High St selling groceries, rations, ice cream etc. Our daughter was just 5 weeks old and was baptized in St Germain Church, our son Peter went to school in the Old Tithe Barn, Mrs Buttery was the teacher. Mr Skippon ran the Pictures with 5 changes a week, each show had 2 features, a cartoon & news reel, he also ran the taxi business. Mrs Sanders worked hard for the British Legion [women's section]. Jack Lynch did a lot of work for us, he replaced the garden in front of the shop and made a concrete pad in front, & cement-faced the front wall, and also removed a wall inside the shop to make it bigger. This is my Grandma's House
The house on the left with the four attics was my Grandma's house. I have lots of fond memories of this house. I even had my own bedroom! Mine was the second attic from the left and it enjoyed a beautiful view of the gardens below. Grandma used to run a bed and breakfast, with also some long term boarders. I can remember helping to get the breakfast ready and putting it in the dumb waiter and running up the stairs and putting it by the door!! It was my job too to set the big dining table and call the guests for breakfast or tea. In the late afternoon we would retire to the cosy room and sit by the fire with the cuckoo clock ticking away the cold winter days!! Holidays
I stayed here with my mother and sisters when I was 5 and later when I was 11. Then it was owned by the Holiday Fellowship (now HF Holidays) who ran walking holidays for families.
I have very fond memories of the house and the area. It was a magical place for a young child - very exciting to be in a big house right by the beach. It even had a games room with a ping pong table (yes it was a simpler time!)
Every day we went on guided walks and visited some lovely places including Goathland and Roseberry Topping? and in the evenings all the guests joined together and made their own entertainment.
We all had great fun!

The Time of my Life
Hi ! My name is Martine and I am French. I came to New Marske by chance when I started to study English and I staid with the Alexanders and their three children, Jean, John and Moira. I had a great time with them and I enjoyed it so much that I came over there every summer for three years in a row. I was a massive fan of England and I wanted to stay. Life decided otherwise and I never came back until three years ago, when I had the opportunity to make the jump. Now I live and work in Brighton but I can't wait to pay a visit to Yorkshire.
The area must have changed quite a lot over the years and I wonder wether I will recognize the places I loved so much.
Life was very peaceful. The people who lived there were very friendly and the Alexanders were incredibly nice to me.

Upleatham Church
I remember that The Green Howards (Army) did a renovation on the church some years ago. It could be anywhere between 1960 / 1970 ish, but I do remember that as a philatelist, a First Day Cover was issued and I bought one. Unfortunately I sold on my collection, so can't pinpoint that event. I know that they did a great clean up job, whitewashing the inner church and doing a general tidy up. I have recently been up to take my own photographs for my church 'Newsletter' as I do write up places of interest as a feature.

Upleatham
We lived in Upleatham, my gran, grandad and my mum and dad. I was really young and my grandparents had lived there for a long time. We lived in a row of houses as the centre of the village and my grandad worked in the local saw mill and had other jobs. We had no electricity and no running hot or cold water. We had an outhouse at the back of the house up a hill. It was really cold going up there in winter! No bathroom and the men used to shave in the kitchen using the sink. I remember that grandad had the kind of razor that he sharpened on a leather strap.
My mum and gran had to do everything by hand, baking, washing and all the housework. Upleatham was a nice community and we knew everyone in the village. There were rooks that inhabited the woods behind our house and my grandad taught me everything about the nature around us.

Upleatham Church
I have happy childhood memories of walks to Upleatham's tiny church with my dad when I spent 15 years of my childhood living at Skelton. We would walk to the church through the fields from Barns Farm.
Even though I was so young I rember my mum saying that the little church had work done on it and so Dad took me along to visit the church not long after its renovaton by the Green Howards in the year 1966. At the time it came under the parish of Skelton, and Micheal Stark was rector and vicar of Upleatham. I remember the door always being open for private prayer and to be able to see the things of interest and read up on some of the local history. The church was always nicely kept with flowers along with a little book stall and you put the money in a box in the wall near the door. Ancestors
My grgrandparentsx3 were married in Upleatham church in September 1826. They were Thomas Dennis and Mary Miller. She had been baptised there in 1804.Does anyone recognise the names??? I am hoping to visit the area in September (2011).
