Essex memories
Hello! I am Arnold Chapman, my father was the minister of the little chapel (now a private house). I used to play with a lad called I think Ronald Babcock?? who lived in a farm nearly opposite. My memories of the heath are from 1980 when my mother - Kathleen (Topsy) Whybrow and father bought me and my brother to the heath in the summer of 1980 for five months. Having just moved to Harlow new town my only memories of Potter Street then was the transport cafe because that was the original A11 trunk road coming from London. What a lovely caff that was, I ended up being a regular there till it had to close down, shame!

Rose (my mother) used to work in Wellford's coner shop. I was born in the 'Potter Street' Perry springs in the 1960s, wow how Harlow has changed from my day. I remember Wellford's coner shop also Wright's Dairy... and it was great going to the schools in Potter Street. Now the swimming pool has nearly gone! Brays Grove School has gone!... [more]

Families with small children could always come to one of the many paddling pools in the area. The pool setting is designed so that a whole day could be spent there, with grassy banks for having a picnic and open spaces in which to run about.

Harlow swimming pool is in the Town Park. The site is quite near the part of the River Stort that had been used for swimming lessons and galas by local schools for at least one hundred years.
