National Service

I know I was doing my bit for my country at the time but Medmenham will always be in my memory because of the great friends I made at the RAF station. It was also a beautiful part of the country to be doing my service. I got to meet some of the locals who worked on site at the time and found them very friendly towards this Bermondsey, London lad. At weekends when I was off duty some of the lads I was doing service with and myself would go for walks down the country lanes and really enjoy the countryside and call in at the local pubs and enjoy the local brews. I wonder if you can imagine what that was like for a Londoner. One thing is for sure this lad at 69 years of age will never forget Medmenham.

RE: RE: National Service

Hello Ted,
If my memory serves me right, you shared a room in Theak Block with Roger Jeffries, Roger Levicki and me. I worked in Unit pay accounts, opposite our block, and it was not a bad life. I visited the old camp recently, but all that remains is Danesfield House, the old Group HQ, which is now an upmarket hotel. The part that housed our block, the mess, WAAF quarters, and all the HQ unit is now a swish training facility.
I have a photo of us waiting to "go into battle" on the one and only training exercise that I recall, and would be glad to provide a copy.
It's good to be reminded of days in our youth, and I was delighted to read your message.
Best wishes
David Loosley

RE: RE: National Service

Hello David and Ted

I too worked in the accounts, c1956. Started under a Scottish Sergeant and Flight Sergeant. I think later we had a Flight Sergeant Worthington take over, though I may have that wrong as my memory for names is suspect. Wing Commander i/c Accounts and Sqadron Leader Camp commander, (ex WW11 Pilot I seem to remember). I remember we had a Adjutant with a Bull terrier dog and they would walk together with a similar gait.
Your mention of Roger Levicki brought back an instant memory of standing on the touch line of the sports field and shouting "Give the ball to Levicki" or am I really going gaga.
Memories of Sports day when it was you WILL be taking part. Came second in a very dubious 2 mile walk and won an even more dubious Shot put.
As you say good to be reminded of those days. I enjoyed my time there but always thought it was cheap labour as National Service man.

All the best
Ioan James (Taff)
