Mr & Mrs Harris
I remember your parents so well, running the shop. Your father used to add everything up himself out loud, and your mum was always so quiet and kind, with her long dark hair pinned up. And I remember they had a Ford Anglia car and I remember seeing them going out in their car on the afternoon the shop was closed, to the surrounding countryside and eating sandwiches. I remember Jennifer, she died of multiple sclerosis or something like that and remarkably enough I remember being in Carol's shop when she came in and told them all that she had had the diagnosis from the doctor. I remember she had young children and everyone thought it was so sad. She had dark curly hair, I can see her so clearly. Do you know what happened to the Giddys? I remember Mr Giddy having a heart attack, and I remember their house so well. They were really kind to me and Elizabeth Giddy and I were friends. Thank you so much for all the catch up information, it brings back such wonderful memories. I always remember the summers in the village were so long and sunny, and as you say, it was a safe environment. Keep in touch.

RE: RE: Mr & Mrs Harris
Yes, Dad always did add up everything out loud. Mum always tried to help everyone. They had Wednesday afternoons off from the shop and Sunday. The Jennifer you are remembering was Jennifer Warden (nee Olver), she was my best friend and died in 1984 from the effects of MS, she was only thirty-five. Her daughter Paula married fairly recently. I keep in touch with Marilyn Randle, Jenny's sister, who still lives in the village. Jennifer Babbage (nee Pomeroy) would have left Menheniot before you were there. The Giddys were good people and ran a shop for a while. We used to go in there sometimes before catching the school bus to Liskeard in the mornings. When my elderly mother was in Passmore Edwards hospital near the end of 1994 Mrs Giddy was in the same ward. We had a lovely chat about old times and her family. We were emigrating to here (New Zealand) at the time. Elizabeth was in South Africa then. Bette Giddy was selling her house a few years ago and moving from the village but I don't know what happened. My Dad died in 1987 and Mum in 2000 aged 91. The shop was their life really and they enjoyed a good rapport with all the customers. Do keep in touch.

RE: RE: Mr & Mrs Harris
Mr and Mrs Rex and Gwen Harris were my aunt and uncle, Uncle Rex was my mum's eldest brother we used to visit them often when we were small children. I am so lucky to find this page about Menheniot as I have been trying for a long time to find my cousin Noreen, we lost touch with each other many years ago and since my own mum died I have often thought about her. I just know she emigrated, today I took up my family history projects again and hit on the idea of looking for a History of Menheniot in case it came up with something, as I know Uncle Rex and Aunt Gwen ran the local shop for very many years. I am hoping now I will be able to contact Noreen.

I'm so very glad I started this thread now, and now you can contact your family through this site I'm so glad for you. Reading through these posts has brought back so very many happy memories. I recently heard that Molly Paler, a village resident for many many years died just a few years ago at a ripe old age. I'm glad to know that Mr and Mrs Harris had a happy retirement together. I look forwar to hearing that you'e contacted Noreen again. Best wishes.

I remember Mr and Mrs Harris, I was born in the village and my sister Maria knew Noreen. My father was known as Yorkie but always pronounced wrong! He wound the village clock! We lived on Bowling Green the posh council estate, well it was all those years ago! All the names I remember well! I moved away many years ago, I reaaly miss it...
