My Childhood Summers in The Village
I was brought up near London but when I was about 8 my brother married and moved down to live in Menheniot as his in-laws owned a bungalow on the Trewint Estate and purchased the village hairdressers (Carol-Anne's) for my sister in law. (This was in the late sixties/seventies). My brother and sister-in-law (Brian & Carol) married in Menheniot church and I remember being a bridesmaid and loads and loads of villagers waiting outside the church when we came out. They lived in Liskeard to begin with, then bought a bungalow on the Fourgates estate when they were first built. I spent every summer with them and as the hairdressers was somewhat the centre of the village, I got to know many many of the villagers over the years. I well remember Mr & Mrs Harris who ran the Co-Op, Mrs Scannelberry who lived in the house adjoining the hairdressers, Molly Paler who owned the bangalow called Imago on the Trewint Estate next to the Bowdens, the Giddys and many more. I would love to hear from anyone who was in the village during that time who might remember me and I would especially love to hear what happened to the village people who I knew from that time. I remember a nice family who had (I think) four children, when the father was tragically drowned in a diving accident. I also remember a very kindly elderly lady called Mrs Davey who used to come in weekly and have her hair done. Looking at the maps now it would seem that the village has been developed a lot since then. I haven't been to the village for proabably 30 years or more, and would really enjoy some up to date news. I often think back to those days with great fondness.

RE: RE: My Childhood Summers in The Village
Carrie, although I had left the village by then I remember Carol-Anne's salon opening as my grandmother (Mrs Maunder) became a regular. She was one of the original tenants on the Bowling Green estate (No 20) when it was built, about 1959, and lived there until she went into an old folks' home in about 1984. Gran's next door neighbour (Mrs Babbage) was Jennifer Scantleberry's mother in law (Jennifer married Terry Babbage.) In addition to the Co-op run by Mr and Mrs Harris, the shop opposite was run by Frank Spring (might have that wrong, pushing the memory cells here) and then Mr and Mrs Bully. There was also a butcher (Guy Olver) next to the pub. The Giddys also ran a small shop from their home for a few years (1960s I think.) If I'm thinking of the right Bowdens, Mr and Mrs Bowden lived at the farm end (John Stevenson's farm, now the restaurant) of Station Road before retiring to the village. The farmer's dog was called Bengo!

Oh I was delighted to read your comment, what a shame we weren't in the village at the same time. Carol's Mum and Dad, Ida and Horace Bowden, actually lived in the bungalow called Homleigh on the Trewint estate, so maybe aren't the ones you are thinking of. I remember the name Babbage, and Mr and Mrs Bully, all gone now I would guess. I have sent you a message via email, any other memories you can dig up would be very much appreciated. Many thanks.

I was brought up in the village from 1950 until about 1968. My parents were Rex and Gwen Harris who ran the Co-Op. I remember Carol-Anne's hairdressers starting up. Her father worked for the Co-Op at the time. She was a lovely girl and Mum had her hair done at the salon. Mr and Mrs Scantleberry ran a shoe repair shop there previously. Florence and Walter Bennett and their mother lived next to us in Central Villas, next to the other shop. Mr and Mrs Hill ran it when I was a child and then Mr and Mrs Bully. I still keep in touch with Marilyn Randle (nee Olver) who lives at 20 Bowling Green where Mrs Maunder lived. Think I remember Graham Cazer. Mrs Babbage was a great friend of Hilda Pomeroy, her daughter Jennifer (sadly now passed on) married Terry Babbage. Reg and Holda Pomeroy were good neighbours and friends to my parents and sometimes we went to Hannafore or Seaton beach together. Jennifer and Terry taught me to swim. All the housing estates were fields back then and where Fourgates estate is it was an Allotment. In the small field below they sometimes held Sankey evenings organised by the Edwards from the Methodist chapel on East Road. The chapel had a big Monkey Puzzle tree outside then. My friend Rosemary Carhart and I loved to watch all the weddings. Someone forgot the wedding ring once at the chapel. The people at Scawns House had horse and hounds meets and I was lifted onto one of the horses once. One of the dogs usually got left behind and had to be taken to Scawns. Everything was very safe and free and easy then, as children we walked all over the place, often calling in at Trewint farm where the Easterbrooks lived. Evelyn Rowe and Pearl Davis at the other farms went to school with me and Ruth Stevens.
