Trouble Tut'mill
Whilst this isn't actually one of my recollections, I do know that Haddenham had at least two mills. One of them being owned back in 1809 by Messrs William and Robert Pate. My Gtx5 Grandfather, Philip Newman was a miller at their mill but unfortunately got 'caught in the workings' and was accidentally killed. Pretty gruesome really - no wonder he was buried the next day.
I'm unsure as to whether this mill is 'killer mill' or whether it was the other mill. I believe that only one is standing today.
Graham & Fishers
The building nearest the camera on the right is (was) Graham and Fishers - founded by my great-grandfather Tom. His sons Alg (my grandfather) and Spencer worked in the business all their lives, and my father Douglas worked there until 1966. His cousin Richard also spent some time in 'the Shop' before setting up his own business further along the High Street.
The scene in the photo is actually very much as I remember it in my early childhood in the fifties, but it changed a good deal in the next 10 or fifteen years.
My parents and I had some rooms in the building, courtesy of my gt grandmother, Isabel (Bel), about 1948 - 50, and the window over the front door was that to my bedroom.
Later we lived in the cottage at the bottom of the yard, on Railway Lane. The main building had originally been one of the town's two coaching inns, and our cottage was then the pub or tap for the ostlers etc. In... Read more
Willingham - Haydens
My nan was born a Hayden in London, her father Levi and his ancestors go back in the village to the 1500s. Nan and grandad - Emma and Henry (Harry) Welsh - lived at Ivy Cottage, 30 Church Street in their twilight years and are buried in the churchyard. Nan once said she was related to the whole village. I am researching the family tree, and I must admit that many family lines do entwine!
Childhood Memories
I was born in Earith High St. at a place called 'The Laurels', long gone I think. I went to school at Earith VC and the head teacher was Mr. Harrison (Pip). My mother kept the Crown pub for a long time and before that the George and Dragon. I would like to hear if anyone is running a web site as I have lots of old pictures I would like to share.
Earith, Cook's Drove
Hi, my husband, Tony, was born in Cooks Drove, Earith, in the actual house that's still there to this day. After a year there he moved to St Ives but we now live in Bluntisham.
All his sisters were born in Earith and his dad used to bike to over railway crossing where he worked as the guardsman and crossing guard. But when we moved to St Ives his dad worked for the then St Ives borough council. His dad's name was Ernie Simons, and I wondered if anyone remembers him.
School Master's House, High Street
Anyone living in Earith before 1970 will know my name, not because of me, but through my father, Don Guymer, and my mother Beryl. Dad was known because of the haulage firm he used to run out of the house in the High Street.
What I would dearly love is to find some photos of the house as it used to be, not as it is now, a bungalow. If there is ANYONE who has any pics of the OLD SCHOOLMASTER'S HOUSE, PEMBROOKE HOUSE in Earith, I would be gratefull for a copy of the pics, photocopy, scanned copy, I don't mind.
I was born in the house in 1961, one of the last I think to be born in the village. I lived there up until I was 18, then off I went to the army, returning after I had done my time. I now live in St Ives, but often think back to what the old house would be like now.
