Memories of A 'SweetShop'
My father owned and operated the tobacconist and confectioners in this parade of shops from 1954 for many years. He was a blinded WWII serviceman trained by St Dunstans. The lower row of 3 white shops to the right of this photo I believe was originally 'Tea Rooms'. Another was an ironmongers, I forget the middle one. They have been demolished recently for ? flats?

RE: RE: Memories of A 'Sweet Shop'
I was the Hoover rep covering the whole of Merrow and W Clandon, during this period, and have very fond memories of the people I came in contact with, one of whom was the lovely blind man who ran this shop, almost on his own. I used to buy my cigs there, and became very friendly with him, often staying for a chat (I wish I could remember his name). He knew every nook and cranny of that shop, and could lay his hand on anything that was asked for. I used to be mesmerised when watching him deal with the money, and how he used to place the notes between his fingers, to work out the difference between a 10 shilling or a £1 note. He was very keen on music, and I remember taking him in my car to Guildford, to listen to one of the first Stereo demonstrations given by the Decca company. Fond memories.
