My Old School - John V. Culbert

Hugh Bell School 1896

I attended this school around 1945 to 1949. In my final years I was School Vice Captain and represented the school at football, basketball, athletics and swimming. I was Middlesbrough Schoolboy Swimming Champion 1948 and played Water Polo for the Middlesbrough Junior and Senior Team. I also took part in the Mile Swim in the RiverTees starting at Yarm and in the 2 Mile Swim in the River Wear (Durham). In the latter event I was 9th out of 99 Swimmers, the rest mainly adults. I went on to Middlesbrough Constantine Technical College achieving a London Unversity Matriculation in French and English Language after 1 year of a 2 year course.

RE: RE: My Old School - John V. Culbert

I also attended this school from 1945 - 1949 but cannot recall the name John Culbert. I was in class 1a first year then 2a next before entering the practical classes 3p and 4p, leaving in July 1949. When I started the Head was "Taffy" Evans and on leaving Mr.Harmer.
Apart from a school pal, Bert Elliott, who married my sister I have not heard or seen of anyone who was at the school during my time.
Having spent the last two years researching family history I have not come across any photographs from these years and wonder if John has any others he would be willing to share....Cliff Wilson

Hi Cliff, I do not remember your name either but that is not surprising considering the amount of water that has flowed under the bridge! Some names for you, Teachers - English - Baggy Jones, Maths - Buller Madden, French- Charlie Maingot, Geography - Jock McGregor. School Captain was Dickie Purvis. My class - Mike Arnison, Derek Wilkinson, Tod Turnbull, Jackie Bolton, Kenny Bolton, Alan Roberts, Kenny Ashworth, Malcolm Brown, Tom Jordan. I have a photo of the Athletics Team at this time but I am unable to attach it to this. Perhaps you could send me your e-mail address to john@jvcsecurity.com and I can reply with an attachment. There was of course during this time a very famous name - Brian Clough but I suspect well behind us. Kind regards John
