The busy industrial village of Millom on the Duddon Estuary was founded on the wealth won from the iron ore discovered at nearby Hodbarrow in 1868. With the slopes of Black Combe and the Lakeland mountains to the north, Millom occupies an enviable position, and was the home of the Lakeland poet Norman Nicholson.

I was born in Market Street in 1939. Later, because of the war, my mum left me in Millom for my grandad and grandma Kirby to look after me. Mum went back to be with my dad in heavily bombed Manchester. I spent the war years here and they were very happy years.
