It Has to be The Canal .........
My cousin who lived beside the canal in Gringley Road was Roy Butroid, my favourite cousin, who was the local carpenter and later undertaker. Sadly he died eight years ago but his widow, a lovely lady named Pauline, still lives there and my husband and I sometimes visit. Margaret Freebury (from another well known Misterton family) was Walter Freebury's daughter who was my mother's cousin. She unfortunately died but was Roy's first wife and together they had a son named Michael and a daughter named Linda.
Across the canal from Roy's house was the brickyard and I think a friend of my brother, Robert Clarke, used to live next door - name of Neville Wilson (I'm not sure of the name but he may still live there). Further down Gringley Road my Uncle Bob (Butroid) and Auntie Fanny had a small farm where I first saw battery hens - not good but they made him a lot of money! Next door was Snell's Farm and Miss Snell used to run around carrying a heavy pail of milk. She delivered Grandma's milk; always knew the jug would be in the window and she measured out the milk with a metal gill ladle.
Miss Moseley and her Red Setter dog lived across Church Lane from Grandma and nearby lived Dorothy Cooper, my half cousin. Colton's Farm (I think my Mother's cousin) was near and I seem to remember Robinson's? Farm was on the corner. I think the son nicknamed Robbo was a friend of my brother when they both attended Gainsborough Grammar School.

RE: RE: It Has to be The Canal ...
Hello Joan
Just looking on the site and found 'your memories' of Misteron. I thought you would like to know that I too have similar memories. I used to go to stay with my Aunt Helen who lived in Newells Terrace. We often used to walk down to 'Fanny Butteroid's ' and I remember being shown the battery hens. I spoke to Roy Butteroid on the phone when my aunt died because he was doing the funeral - I'm sorry to hear he has since died. I used to love going to Misterton so it was so lovely to see the memories on this site. My e-mail is lorraine.osborne@virgin.net - we might have other things to share.

Sorry not to have replied earlier. I didn't really expect any response! So you knew my Auntie Fanny; married to my mother's brother Bob. It was our first experience of battery hens and we thought it cruel. Cousin Roy Butroid was the local joiner and undertaker and was my favourite cousin. He was 10 years older than me so I looked up to him. At the time he used to pull my leg about my boyfriend Alec Blackburn who lived in either Newells Row or Terrace (the long row of houses going out of Misterton towards Walkerith). I took my 11 plus in Misterton whilst waiting for a house in North Africa as my father was in the Army. I went to Gainsborough Girls High School, then to North Africa, then back to Gainsborough until I moved yet again to Hampshire to a further education college before joining the Bank. My visits to Misterton were otherwise only short waiting for other postings. My mother was Minnie Butroid from a very well known and liked local farming family. Alan and Denis still live in Misterton and I sometimes visit Roy's widow Pauline. That visit is well overdue but, like everyone, my husband and I are kept busy with gardening and other things and the days just slip away. We have just returned with out caravan from 2 weeks in Devon and then entertained my 15 year old grandson who is on a visit to England from Australia. My son emigrated there 20 years ago. I have one daughter in Hampshire and one near Derby close to where we live. I am guessing you are younger than my 74 but thank you for taking the time to write to me. Have you ever tried Misterton's fish & chips?! They used to be lovely!!
