St Joseph's Convent Monks Kirby
I started at St Joseph's when I was seven as a boarder to join my cousin Julieanne Benifer who had been at the school from the age of 2. I liked Mother Lawrence and did not like Sister Bernard, she was not nice to me. Loved Sister Rose, and my favourite was Sister Zita who taught me to play the piano and sing. Was known at the convent as their little nightingale. Food was good too. Anyone else there around the same time, some names who shared my time there: Nicola Clarke, Miranda Kingwell and Florida Klimbo. If you remember be, get in touch.
Other Names at The Convent With me
I was Lorraine Weaver when I attended there, shared the smaller dormitory with Bernadette Menahan. Does anyone remember me?
St Josephs Convent
I too was a boarder for just one year, along with my two younger sisters Linda and Angela. One night Angela was ill - do you remember? To call the sisters you had to pull the bell rope on the landing.
Sister Lawrence always seemed so strict but underneath I think she was a big softie, Sister Bernard well, she was strict but Sister Rose was the worst and such a beautiful face too!!
As boarders we had to go to chapel twice on Sunday and the services were in Latin.
I think it was Sister Joseph who taught the piano, she would rap you on the knuckles if you made a mistake.
Weekends were taken up by writing letters to our parents, walking on the common and we were allowed to watch some television, one of the sisters even taught me how to play patience.
Meals were not too bad but I hated the marmalade pudding, many a time I had to sit... Read more
BROCKHURST JUNIOR SCHOOL 1958-1961
I lived at 61, COVENTRY RD, PAILTON and went to this school. My best friend was Christine Bakewel that lived at No. 34. My Dad died in our house when I was 2 weeks off 11 and he is buried in the church in Monks Kirby. It wasn't until recently that I found his grave. I remember we had to get the bus from Monks Kirby to Pailton and once there was an accident between 2 buses and 1 passenger on the other bus had her variscose veins burst. All of us pupils in our bus were ok. My Mum who worked at AWA in Bitterswell at the time found out about the crash and was so worried until she knew I was ok. Before my Dad died, I had won a colouring competition in the Coventry Evening Telegraph and the prize was 5 lessons on an piano accordian in Coventry. I took to it well and so when my Dad died, all the men at the AWA went... Read more
St Joseph's Primary , Monks Kirby.
Hi to all who attended St Joseph's. We moved to Monks Kirby in 1974. My father was Trevor Vaughan, the Vicar. We lived in the Old Vicarage, this is a now a hotel or private home now I think? Monks Kirby were the happiest days of my life, I was aged 7. Sister Rose at the school could be terrifying, yet gentle also. She was very angry with me when I entered the girls loos as a bet. Is the school or outside pool still there? I remember Mrs Towers, she was great, she taught me to sew. I attended the school for 2 years, then was sent to board at Emscote lawn in Warwick, which didn't suit me. I missed the leafy fields, St Joseph's and my friends.
Sister Rose
My best memory was Sister Rose, the smallest scariest women ever xx; I loved that school sooo much, my happiest memories as a kid are of there. We left Pailton in 1981 and moved to Norfolk but have never forgotten my roots xx
Brockhurst School, Monks Kirby
My father, Kenneth Hollingsworth, took over the headship of the school in 1951 and I spent the happiest of childhood years both at the school and in and around the village. I particularly remember Coronation Day when the school was filled with television sets so that the whole community could gather together to watch and celebrate. We had a fancy dress parade when I was dressed as Queen of Hearts with a red tray of jam tarts I had helped to make myself. I came second though to a form friend whose name escapes me although many other names leap to the front of my mind. Josie Treadwell, Robert Hewitt, Carole Leason, Ione Duggan, etc.
I had many happy days in Monks Kirby before we moved to Slough!!!
St Joseph's Convent School
Hi there everyone that went to the St Joseph's Convent School. Myself, my brother and sister all went there between the mid 1950s to early 1960s (myself), 1958 to 1963. I can remember all the names mentioned by yourselves including the nuns' names. We were day pupils and we lived at St Paul's College (Stretton under Fosse), our dad was one of the groundsmen down there. I can rememember having huge great big ice slides in the playground in the winter, we would not allow that now. I can remember a couple of the girls' names who were boarders at the time, a Mary Clarke from somewhere in Lincolnshire who was always very homesick, also a Maria O'Meara from Birmingham, there was also a Burmese girl who came to the school from Coventry, I'm afraid I can't remember her name. Does anybody remember David Broadfield or the Caffery family or the Humes? They all attended the school around this time. I myself stayed in Stretton under Fosse till the... Read more
