The Fire Station

My Mother was born in the flat above Mortlake Fire Station in 1899. Her Father W.O.Knight was the Officer in charge. I lived there until approx 4 years of age and can remember the two fire engines and many details. The building is still there but has been converted into offices.

RE: RE: The Fire Station

I believe my great grandfather Ambrose Lester was either living at or based the fire station in 1911 - based on the 1911 Census. I have been in touch with Fire Service Museum and they have confirmed that they have his records. I think he was a fireman all his working life and was based at a number of different stations. He and his first wife had 8 sons and it is possible that one of their sons was buried in the Old Mortlake Cemetery.
