Lincolnshire memories

Old Document

I don't really have a memory- rather some antiquities associated with Whaplode. What I have are two medieval documents that refer to someone dying - probably of the black death that arrived in England & the area at the time the document was written- in 1349. The document- written on vellum with seals- refers to Whaplode- known in those days as Quappelade- to be precise, ""Quappelade- next to Gibbesdrove on the west side". Finding Whaplode led me to this site- but that's only half the mystery..

I still can't locate Gibbesdrove- which must be somewhere near Spalding and Whaplode. If anyone knows where it is, maybe you could email me out here in New Zealand- johnhb69@gmail.com Thanks! John Hansen

Father's Connection With The Park

My father worked in the field that became Carters Park when Mr Carter gave it to the town.  He was Cyril King and he was aged 13 at the time, having left school to work on the land.  It is very moving as he died in 2003 and his ashes are now in the cemetery directly opposite the park.  He eventually went on to farm down Crown Colony/Sluice Road Holbeach Marsh until his retirement.

I went to school and we had to go down High Street every day and we had to go for lunch every day, I miss my home town. My name is June Mackman Warner.

Talbot Hotel

I was born in Holbeach in 1958 and lived in the Talbot Hotel, High Street until 1967 when we moved to Moulton. My parents were Frank and Beryl Richmond. I have very fond memories of my childhood in Holbeach. We regularly went to the Milroy for Sunday lunch, best food ever! I was a regular visitor to Pledgers toy shop on a Saturday to spend my pocket money which was opposite our hotel. Franklins grocers was managed by my uncle Walter Jones and there was always a wonderful smell of freshly ground coffee as you walked in, and big legs of ham hanging behind the counter. There is a lot to be said for the good old days when food was just the best. Although I haved lived in Nottingham since I was a teenager I still get sausages from Swepstones whenever I can. My children love them! Unfortunately the Talbot was pulled down many years ago and I have very few photos. If anyone has any photos of the... Read more

Holbeach Marsh

We moved to Holbeach Marsh in 1952. I came from a large family of six boys and five girls. My father and two of my elder brothers worked for Mr Caldwell, on his farm. I went to Holbeach St Mathews school from 1952 until 1955 with my twin sisters Edith and Mary, and the youngest of the family George. My neighbours were the Smiths and my best mate was Roy Barber who moved away in 1954. If there was any trouble or mischief around, we were in it. I remember one time, I was on my way back from catching sticklebacks when I saw Roy's dads car coming towards me. I also remember the car swerving from one side of the narrow road to the other, and when the car pulled up I nearly fell over because Roy was driving. Not to be asked twice, I jumped into the passenger seat. Roy was really to short to reach the pedals (hence the swerving). Well, he drove and I worked the... Read more

Elizabeth Allaban

I wonder if anyone could be of help. I am in the process of tracing my family tree and have discovered my great grandmother, Elizabth Allaban (or Allabon) (married in Spalding to Joseph Preddy in March 1891) was a servant in Elton Villas, Spalding. Does anyone know where this is or do you know of anyone with the name Allaban? Joseph Preddy was born in Nettleton.
I would love to hear from anyone as I have become seriously addicted to genealogy.
Thanks
Jane Mitchell

Jailhouse Rock

I remember living in Cowbit and went to see jailhouse rock in the Odeon cinema. Never saw the end of the film because the last bus went to early!

I was in the Gleede boys school in 1960-1961 I then moved to Long sutton and the Peele school.
