I remember my mum working at the Shoulder of Mutton in the 1980s, as me and my sister Kathryn used to help her at weekends. My mum was also dinner lady for the C of E, when I used to attend the school. If anyone remembers my family (Evelyn Allan, Tony Allan, Kathryn Allan, and me Tracey Allan, or even my grandparents Mr and Mrs Etherington), please email me at: traceycairns15@googlemail.com, tinkerbell2020@msn.com or honey_bear326@yahoo.co.uk. Thank you, Tracey Allan.

Thomas Henry Atkinson The Rookery

I am trying to find anything about my family the Atkinsons who once lived at The Rookery Middleton Tyas. Thomas Henry Atkinson was married to Jane Hall Wester and they had two children that i know of Leonard Henry and Rollo Edward. Thomas was a Timber importer and my family of Atkinsons came from the Newcastle area. My great aunt Elsie Primrose Atkinson never married and moved to the Richmond area from Slaley where she lived with her parents George Blaxland Atkinson and his wife Mary Lawton Atkinson maiden name Forster and my grandfather. Elsie Primrose died somewhere in the Richmond area as did my grandfather Harold Blaxland Atkinson who also was a timber importer, he was living at Marske Hall when he died in 1968 he once owned The Kings Arms in Reeth and when he was living in Fremington was a good friend of Professor Scatchard. I would love to find out what happened to Thomas Atkinsons two sons and am hoping someone might point me in the... Read more

Pear Tree House Skeeby

After living in Richmond I bought and renovated Pear Tree House (on the right of this 1913 picture) in 1972.  The previous occupants had died when I found the house it was covered in ivy and I understand at one time Funeral directors operated from the property.

It took eighteen months to renovate PTH into a double fronted Georgian Bay home.  PTH had no foundation at the rear of the property, built straight onto the ground it stood on, under pinning with new foundations was required.

Inside PTH was a cellar that was used as an apple store, the apples collected from the orchard at the rear of PTH. On stepping out of PTH at the front you step onto common land that any one can walk on or feed their cattle.  Also a wonderful beck runs through the village green and in my time local Chinese restauranteurs came to pick the watercress that grew in the running water.

The garden behind PTH, not bought... Read more
