An Unchanged Caravan Site
Wow, this brings back memories of pics my parents had - my folks had a caravan (static) in 1952 and my mum's parents did before that. My sister and my brother (born 1952-1955) spent childhoods there and so did I (born 1968), we still go for at least 4-6 weeks a year to Kiln Cliffs. The pic shown is around the middle of the site looking towards the kiln - we have a caravan on the hill as you turn into the site on the left - they used to have chalets there up to about 1980 I think? It was George and Ernie who used to run the site years ago and in the winter they towed the statics over the road for storage - many didn't make it back due to the corrosion the caravans used to suffer in the days gone back. Mundesley, Hotel Continental Formerly The Grand Hotel
I drove past this building yesterday and am sad to see what an appalling state in which it has deteriorated. I remember this Hotel in the 1960s when it was a hive of activity with a full complement of staff (just a few months ago I met the lady who used to be the Housekeeper there for a few years). The building now looks dreadful, in an almost condemned state. It is a real eyesore on the skyline which does nothing for this otherwise nice area. I have photographs of the hotel in the early 1920s when it was known as the Grand Hotel,through to the 1950s and the entire building looked wonderful, in absolute pristine condition. But now? Dreadful, absolutely dreadful. Whoever is responsible for its demise should be ashamed of themselves!
Fraser Crescent
I lived in these quarters in Fraser Crescent (No 4) in 1969/70 while stationed at RAF Neatishead. The prefabs were fully furnished and officially classed as sub standard accomodation and as such the rent was 2 a week which included a lorry coming each week to provide clean bed sheets. The RAF station was closed and the prefabs were just used as married quarters for RAF Coltishall and Neatishead. As there were just 16 prefabs it was a close-knit community which has provided many fond memories and lasting friendship. As my wife was a receptionist at the local surgery we moved to a flat in the old surgery for a further 3 years when we were told that the prefabs were going to close which they were in 1971.
Happy Days
I spent one or two weeks here around 1977. I remember the pool and it was the year of the ladybird infestation they were every where. My parents and I would often talk about our holiday there, we have photos somewhere I'm sure. How sad that it's not there today.
Hotel Continental
Well, this is a trip down memory lane. My mum and dad took sister and I there in, I think, 1967 or 1968 (I was 13). I remember listening to The Beatles/The Herd/Floyd (Arnold Lane) in the Hole in the Wall Club and my sister aged 15 ordering me to buy her 10 No 6 ciggies from the garage (I think) across the road. I remember the swimming pool and most of all my first 'girlfriend' called Patricia Henderson from Bushey in Herts (whatever became of her I wonder!). I was in Cromer on business in approximately 2003 and went back there. Yes, it was in such a sorry state having been turned into DHSS flats. I wsa talking with my girlfriend last night, and her folks took her there in 1966. Such a small world. Does anyone know how the building is doing now ?
Hotel Continental, 1962
My parents, Nancy and Tony Harris, managed the hotel at this time and whilst there I was born in Cromer, returning to live for a couple of years, before they took up another posting elsewhere. I do have vague memories of running around in the grounds and apparently found my way to the cliff path.
I have visited Mundesley a couple of times during the last 15 years and agree that what a sad sight this once glorious building on top of the cliffs now looks
Hotel Continental - 1973/74
My dad worked in the Hotel Continental around 1973/74. He met my mother there and he has told me many stories about this beautiful hotel. He visited again recently and by all accounts it is in a very sorry state. That is why it is so nice to find this fantastic picture of the place. By all accounts, the large conservatory was the dining room. If anyone has any memories of the Hotel Continental then I would be grateful if they would post them here.
Parade Cafe & Amusement Arcade
The Parade Cafe & Amusement Arcade is on the left in your picture, My Father bought it for 5000.00 in 1956. It stayed in the family until my brother-in-law Billy Burrows sold it in the mid 1980's. Business-wise it was a goldmine, in those days it was one of the safest beaches on the coastline for 7 miles in each direction. They were still finding land mines all along the East Coast from World War II, and Mundesley had the only good beach access. Great days for my family.
