1977-1996

Hi, I am Adam. I moved to Nazeing in 1977, aged 3 years old, with my mum and dad. We moved down from Harlow, to be nearer my grandparents. I went to Nazeing Primary School and so did my younger sister Joanne, born 1979. She also went to Nazeing Primary School. Then I went to Cardinal Bourne in Broxbourne 3 years... [more]

My ancestral home - Nether Hall Roydon

Hello,

I'm writing from across the Pond. I have been able to trace my paternal ancestor "John Parish" to Nether Hall in 1841. Does anyone have any suggestions how I might get information that is older than 1841? I even have a painting done by one of my ancestors of the ruins of Nether Hall.

Cheers,[more]

Hansells Mead, Roydon

I was born in Hansells Mead in 1946 and was brought up their with my brother and sister. Mum and Dad, Winnie and Bill Peachment, had moved into the house when it was newly built in 1939.
We all attended Roydon School. Dad was involved with the Football Club and I was brought up on football. I remember... [more]

Kingsmead School

I was at Kingsmead boarding school in the early 50s and we used to walk to this church (crocodile style) on Sundays.  After church (we were usually taken out before communion), we would walk back to school where the smell of our Sunday dinner filled the air.  I can still smell it.  The best meal of the week.  Kingsmead was later... Where my mum was brought up

We used to sit and have a rest for five mins on the bench behind the gates when visiting my Step Nan.

Where my mum was brought up

This is the church where most of my mum's stepsisters and brothers got married, as well as my nan after my grandad died.

Where my mum was brought up

We used to walk past this war memorial on the way to my Step-Nan's.

Where my mum was brought up

My grandfather was the lock-keeper at Roydon Lock after he came out of the army after the First World War. He had to have an outside job as he was shot in the neck and also mustard-gassed.

Essex - A Second Selection Photographic Memories

Nazeing's name means 'settlers on the projection of land'. It sits above the River Lea, and is a world of arable fields and market-garden glasshouses. The Red Lion, in the hamlet of Middle Street, was rebuilt in 1888; it is now a residence called the White House. The car outside is a pre-war Morris.

Harlow Town and City Memories

The River Stort, with the Town Park along its banks, has become a beautiful and popular venue for the people of Harlow, Old and New.

Harlow Town and City Memories

Families with small children could always come to one of the many paddling pools in the area. The pool setting is designed so that a whole day could be spent there, with grassy banks for having a picnic and open spaces in which to run about.
