Sefton Church
I grew up in Netherton, it was a was nice place then, well sort of, amongst the fighting, as a child we used to go to Sefton church every Sunday, past the village green post office shop (not there now) and on through the farmer's fields, there would be horses and cows and sheep, we would ride the horses in the field on the way to Sefton church. When we got to Sefton church the old Punch Bowl I remember it well and the livestock in the field with the white gate we would climb over, it was our paradise as a child. It's still beautiful today. I visit quite often, the old mill houses now and there was lilttle shop on the corner (gone now). I remember the days when we got to the Punch Bowl and had a packet of cheese n onion and took the lemonade bottle back for ten pence, I still live here and have fond memories.

RE: RE: Sefton Church
I grew up in Netherton from 1955 to 1979. I lived in Sherborne Avenue. I remember the Eden Vale pub being built, at the bottom of our street, and fell into one of the holes dug for the bollards. Before Marion Square was built there used to be a row of shops, opposite to where the Square is now, and I vaguely recall a Co-Op and some kind of social club where St John's used to hold classes in a back room. After the classes were finished I remember going through the front part and it being full of smoke. I started school life at Netherton Moss. I remember the school had a circular brown marble wash basin with soap bottles above and a brass bar to release the water. I remember trapping my fingers in a toilet door and the nails dropping off weeks later. (Bit of an accident prone childhood!!) Then went to St Oswald's C of E from 1962 - 1966 where we had a school uniform of grey cap, grey jacket with the school badge on (red & yellow/gold with a cross at the top middle?). Can't remember who the head teacher was but I remember Mrs Radcliffe being one of my teachers. Then went to Warwick Bolam County Secondary 1966 to 1971. Before the Sefton Estate was built you could look out over corn fields, from the canal bridge on Fleetwoods / Glovers Lanes, towards Sefton Church and a usual "lads" walk was along the footpaths, at the side of the farmers' fields, to Sefton Church, swing on a rope suspended from an old tree, then nip to the sweet shop, next to the Mill House for sweets and a drink before heading back home.
