I'm A Millfielder

I was born in 1944 at 52 Millfield Crescent, my nana's house, Mrs Liddle. I lived in Millfield till 1963. I was part of Jimmy's gang, I remember doing most of the things that Jimmy did. Saturday matinees there used to show 3 different pictures, first was a cartoon, then a cowboy picture, or fatty and skinny (Laural & Hardy 2 b p.c.) then the serial 'Flash Gordon', or whatever, we got our money's worth, I think it was about a tanner (if you didn't sneak in). I remember going to the evening pictures with my friend Doreen Milne to watch 'White Christmas', I was about 7/8. There used to be 2 pictures on, the little picture, then the big picture, and there was 2 houses, the 1st house was for us kids, the 2nd house was for older ones, us kids had to sit in the first 3 rows, when the picture finished Wally would throw us kids out. This night I enjoyed 'White Christmas' so much I sneaked in to watch it again, I crawled under all the seats to the front row and snuggled down into my seat so no one could see me, especially Wally. I was so comfortable I fell asleep. I was woken up by Sergeant Jardine, Mr Watts and my ma was there, the picture had finished, the place was locked up and I was asleep on the front row. When I wasn't in at 9pm my ma went to look for me, she went to the pictures, Wally told her we were thrown out after 1st house, she looked all over for me, eventually she went to the police station and told them I hadn't come home from the pictures. The police went to Mr Watt's house to get the key and to Wally's, they opened up the picture hall and found me fast asleep on the front row seat. I often think what would I have done if I had woken up in the pitch dark, I know one thing, I would have been frightened. Jimmy, I don't know if you know, but our Bryn is no longer with us, he died December 08. I also lost my Mam December 09, both sadly missed. I have more memories to share soon. Nee Carter.

RE: RE: I'm A Millfielder

Hi Marlene I have just read your memory and never knew about you falling asleep in the pictures. Aye sadly I never found out that Bryn had passed on until later, Tony Stephenson told me when I bumped into him in Tesco, he said Bryn went to see him quite often. I was working on a property in Killingworth building a wall, must of been 12 years ago and this white BMW slowed down, drove away, then came back, it was Bryn he spotted me but wasnt sure at 1st, this was the 1st time I had seen him since he moved down Birmingham must of been 30 years. the last time I seen him he was with Tony they were with there wives in the jingling Gate pub. Vicky and I had called in on our way to Throckley to visit our friends Peter and Celia Graham.
