Growing up in Newlyn

I used to live in Church Town on the corner down the road from the butchers, it was a thatched cottage (long gone now). There was a large pine tree growing on the corner of the churchyard, my brother and I always liked climbing this tree. The tree has also gone now. I had a friend who lived a few yards up the road, he was called Keith Green, I don't know if he still lives in Newlyn. I also remember the Jago family, and the Peters family. My mother used to work with a bunch of women who worked the land, spud picking, strawberry picking, that sort of thing, she was called Dorothy Bailey, or Di to her friends. I also remember playing down the mines with my brother John and Rodney Dix. I have lots of memories of Newlyn, the sun was always shining in those days.

Memories of Cornwall

The Millhouse

I was born at home in the mill house at Kestle Mill. My mother ran a small Bed and Breakfast from there when I was little. My parents were Julia and Michael Soady. The midwife arrived in a red MG to deliver me. I have one picture of the place so if anyone has any info or pics I would love to see them. Jane

Gummow's of Gummow's Shop

This is where my family is from in the 1700-1800 period. Familes of blacksmiths and agricultural people and miners. Names also include Gummow-Gummoe-Nancarrow-Harris-Rounsaval spelled other ways. My 3rd ggf left Cornwall in 1832 for America by way of Canada. No documents to support, just word of mouths. My 3rd ggf is John Gummow Sr and Jennifer Jane Rounsaval

My parents lived in Ennors Road in Newquay during the early 70s. They were an RAF family. I was newly-married & lived in Kent, but I used to love visiting them & spending holidays in beautiful Newquay. My new husband used to love sea fishing trips on the small boats & I would go with him, (the only female amongst the men & very often the only one not sea-sick after 4 hours out at sea!). What fantastic beaches, wonderful cornish pasties & never-forgotten clotted cream! My folks died a while back now & I miss the roar of the Atlantic waves to this day.

We - that means my brothers  and I - arrived at the home from Kent and although we were very small at the time we grew to know this as home. My best memories are of a Sister Esther who looked after us, and watching the TV which had just arrived, plus the very large and thick chocolate Easter egg which had been donated to the home. We knew a couple of boys called Patrick and Howard who were brothers. I am trying to find out what happened to the home after we left in 1958?
