The Boating Lake
I grew up in Newquay - and Trenance Boating Lake was a favourite haunt. There were rowing boats, and some motor boats were added at some point. As I was only 5 in 1960, I was restricted to the paddle boats- which were in an adjacent "lake". They had two handles, one each side, which you turned (a bit like pedals), to propel the boat - great fun! (See Picture ref:N28235) Also I used to help my brother sail our yacht, which was OK unless it was becalmed in the middle! I also remember falling in - it wasn't deep, but I cut my knee on some glass on the bottom.
The Lakeside Cafe at the top of the picture is still there in 2011 - I sat in there having a cup of tea, remembering the old days, just this week (4th October).
Shark Fishing
My uncle Geoff Morris lived down at the Gannell with his wife Lillian. He used to take the tourists out in his boat shark fishing from Newquay Harbour in the summer. We also had the greasy pole sports event at the harbour every summer. You and your opponent would sit facing one another on the pole with a filled sack each to hit one another. I remember doing this event with Terry Warne. He won the event. It is also the harbour where Terry Warne moored his first fishing boat. I remember Terry Warne and his fishermen walking two by two through the streets of Newquay singing old Ssea shanties. It was a very special moment.
Home
We - that means my brothers and I - arrived at the home from Kent and although we were very small at the time we grew to know this as home. My best memories are of a Sister Esther who looked after us, and watching the TV which had just arrived, plus the very large and thick chocolate Easter egg which had been donated to the home. We knew a couple of boys called Patrick and Howard who were brothers. I am trying to find out what happened to the home after we left in 1958?
Theatre
I think it was around this time when we got very excited as a whale had been washed up on the beach, which brought a few people to look at it. Also there was a small theatre there called the Cozy Nook which we changed to the Nozy Cook, I wonder if it is still there and going?
Beautiful Beaches
My parents lived in Ennors Road in Newquay during the early 70s. They were an RAF family. I was newly-married & lived in Kent, but I used to love visiting them & spending holidays in beautiful Newquay. My new husband used to love sea fishing trips on the small boats & I would go with him, (the only female amongst the men & very often the only one not sea-sick after 4 hours out at sea!). What fantastic beaches, wonderful cornish pasties & never-forgotten clotted cream! My folks died a while back now & I miss the roar of the Atlantic waves to this day.
I Lost my Ball
Remember when I went for a walk with Nana and lost my ball off the edge.
