Whyte Family
I am researching family history and have established that the wife of my 2nd Great-Grand Uncle lived at Haccombe House in 1881. His name was James Richard Whyte, he married Janet Bogle in 1874. she was his second wife, his first wife died in 1870. He was aged 71 when he died in 1880. On the 1881 census there are only 4 people shown as having lived there at the time, Janet Whyte (nee Bogle), a cook, a servant and a coachman. I understand he was a Vicar when he lived in Cornwall, which is shown on the 1871 census. Please contact me via this site if anyone has any information on this family and house.

RE: RE: Whyte Family
My wife and I know Haccombe House very well. We spent our honeymoon at the house in 1971 as guest of George and Julia Povey, who were resident owners or keepers at the time, along with a number of guests that were either friends or people renting flats.
Haccome House is the ancestral home of the Carew Family and my wife and I did considerable research into that family, many of whom are buried in the crypt and graveyard of the adjoining church.
It was a wonderful place, steeped in history and I remember very well prising open some fixed door panels, that appear not to have been moved for well over 100 years, to find inscriptions and little notes left by residents going way back in time, possibly even further than your Great Grand Uncle.
We have fond memories of our honeymoon and good holidays at the house in the late 60s and early 70s. We do not know what has become of it now. There was talk of it being turned into a health spa or nursing home but we have not been down to the West Country for many, many, years.
It was a kind of holiday camp at one time in the late 50s early 60s we were told but due to it's dubious activities, we were informed that it was closed down by the council.

My grandad owned this house in 1977. My mum, her sister, brother and my grandparents lived here for years before my grandad turned it into flats.
