Mecca
My paternal grandparents were one of the first families from Aberdeen to have a holiday home, called Mecca, in Newtonhill pre World War 1. I have a photo of my father in a wounded soldier's uniform sitting at a loaded table in Mecca after his discharge from hospital. The uniform, he told me, was a blue suit, a white shirt and a red tie. Alex Fraser, a well known local artist and etcher (one time Principal of Gray's School of Art), was a relative of our family and had a studio in Newtonhill which I recall visiting as a child. Newtonhill was a favourite holiday place for our family and I remember very well buying ginger beer and sugar mice from Mr Milton's bakery with our Saturday pennies. Geordie Taylor's was the grocer's shop where we got paraffin for the oil lamps and we carried the accumulator to, I think, Reid's garage, on the main Aberdeen - Stonehaven road, for a recharge so the more senior members of the family could listen to the wartime news bulletins. The Donald family had the farm next door to the cottage and my younger brother and I made friends with the cows and the hens. The farm was later owned by "Jimmy Mac" and he allowed us to herd the cows from the field near the railway line down through the village for milking time. We felt very grown up.

RE: RE: Mecca
Hi, can anyone help me? My mother has long passed on bless her, she was in the A.T.S during the war, stationed at Paisley, my father (unknown to me all my life) his surname was Knowels and came from Aberdeen, I'm not sure his name was either Jack or Harold, he was then in the 5th Royal Highlanders I expect he has also passed on, but somewhere up there I must have some family who I would dearly love to know then maybe I could see who the other half of me is, it's very strange not knowing who you really are please remember these names Florence Edith Hamilton and the chap's name was Knowels she only told me many times he came from the Granite City, I don't know if I've spelt Knowels right but please can someone help I would really appreciate some knowledge even a tiny bit thankyou Patricia Hamilton

RE: RE: Mecca
could anybody out there help me please? My biological father came from Aberdeen, the Granite City, his name was Knowels and he was in the 5th Royal Highlanders then. My mother's name was Florence Edith Hamilton and she was in the A>T>S. stationed at Paisley. I was born Johnstone 1943, I have a family in maybe Aberdeen somewhere, please can you or anyone help me then I will know the other half of me. His name may have been Jack or Harold but his surname was for sure Knowells, if I've spelt it corectly, is Knowells a common name in Aberdeen? I also have a picture of a shopkeeper, his wife and a little boy on the Beith Road. Thanking you, Patricia Anne Hamilton email: patsaliba@onvol.net
